VIRTUE OF PRAYER:-

The importance of the prayer in Islam cannot be understated. It is the first pillar of Islam that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned after mentioning the testimony of faith, by which one becomes a Muslim. It was made obligatory upon all the prophets and for all peoples. Allah has declared its obligatory status under majestic circumstances. For example, when Allah spoke directly to Moses, He said

And I have chosen you, so listen to that which is inspired to you. Verily, I am Allah! There is none worthy of worship but I, so worship Me and offer prayer perfectly for My remembrance.”

TAHA (13-14)

“Sucessful is the believers who offer the Salah with seriousness & submivness.”

Al-MUMINOON (23:1-2)

Once a man asked the Prophet(saws) about the most virtuous deed. The Prophet stated that the most virtuous deed is the prayer. The man asked again and again and for the first three times, the Prophet answered, “The prayer,” then on the fourth occasion he stated, “Jihad in the way of ALLAH.

MUSNAD AHMAD/IBN HIBBAN.

The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad.”

AL-TABRANI (SAHIH AL JAMI VOLUME 1 PAGE 503)

Narrated Ibn Mas`ud:

A man kissed a woman (unlawfully) and then went to the Prophet and informed him. Allah revealed: And offer prayers perfectly At the two ends of the day And in some hours of the night (i.e. the five compulsory prayers). Verily! good deeds remove (annul) the evil deeds (small sins) (11.114). The man asked Allah’s Apostle, “Is it for me?” He said, “It is for all my followers.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Volume 1, Book 10, Hadith 504)

Narrated `Abdullah:

I asked the Prophet “Which deed is the dearest to Allah?” He replied, “To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times.” I asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” He replied, “To be good and dutiful to your parents” I again asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” He replied, ‘To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah’s cause.” `Abdullah added, “I asked only that much and if I had asked more, the Prophet would have told me more.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 1, Book 10, Hadith 505)

Narrated Abu Huraira:

I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?” They said, “Not a trace of dirt would be left.” The Prophet added, “That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Volume 1, Book 10, Hadith 506)

Narrated Ghailan:

Anas said, “I do not find (now-a-days) things as they were (practiced) at the time of the Prophet.” Somebody said “The prayer (is as it was.)” Anas said, “Have you not done in the prayer what you have done? Narrated Az-Zuhri that he visited Anas bin Malik at Damascus and found him weeping and asked him why he was weeping. He replied, “I do not know anything which I used to know during the life-time of Allah’s Apostle except this prayer which is being lost (not offered as it should be).”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Volume 1, Book 10, Hadith 507)

Narrated Samura bin Jundab:

The Prophet said in his narration of a dream that he saw, “He whose head was being crushed with a stone was one who learnt the Qur’an but never acted on it, and slept ignoring the compulsory prayers.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Volume 2, Book 21, Hadith 244)

In the hadith narrated of the authority of Abu Huraira the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) is reported to have said. while in the hadith narrated by Bakr (the words are like this):He heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) as saying: just see, can anything of his filthiness remain (on the body of) any one of you if there were a river at his door in which he washed himself five times daily? They, said: Nothing of his filthiness will remain (on his body). He said: That is like the five prayers by which Allah obliterates sins.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1410)

“Whoever would like to meet Allah tomorrow (i.e. on the Day of Judgment) as a Muslim, let him preserve these five (daily) prayer when the call for them is given, for they are part of the ways of guidance, and Allah prescribed the ways of guidance to your Prophet. By Allah, if each of you prays in his house, you will have abandoned the Sunnah of your Prophet, and if you abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet you will go astray. I remember when no one stayed behind from the prayer except a hypocrite who was known for his hypocrisy. I have a man coming supported by two others, until he joined the row (of worshippers). There is no man who purifies himself and does it well, and comes to the mosque and prays there, but for every step that he takes, Allah raises him in status one degree thereby, and takes away one of his sins.” (Hasan)

IBN MAJAH (Vol. 1, Book 6, Hadith 777)

Anas bin Malik narrated:

“On the Night of Isra, fifty prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet. Then it was decreased until it was made five. Then it was called out: ‘O Muhammad! Indeed My Word does not change; these five prayers will be recorded for you as fifty.'” (Sahih)

Narrated Abdullah ibn Sunabihi: AbuMuhammad fancies that witr prayer is essential. (Hearing this) Ubadah ibn as-Samit said: AbuMuhammad was wrong. If anyone performs ablution for them well, offers them at their (right) time, and observes perfectly their bowing and submissiveness in them, it is the guarantee of Allah that He will pardon him; if anyone does not do so, there is no guarantee for him on the part of Allah; He may pardon him if He wills, and punish him if He wills.

Then he raised his head with joy on his face, and that was dearer to us than red camels. Then he said:’There is no one who offers the five (daily) prayers, fasts Ramadan, pays Zakah and avoid the seven major sins, but the gates of Paradise will be opened to him, and it will be said to him: Enter in peace.”‘ (Hasan)

It was narrated from Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to a sick person who prayed using a pillow for rukoo’ and prostration “Pray on the ground if you can, and if you cannot, then tilt your head, and make your sujood lower than your rukoo’.”

SUNAN BAIHAQI (4359.ALBAANI SAHEEH 323)

Ibrahim bin Tahman that he said:”From Imran bin Husain who said: ‘I asked Allah’s Messenger (S) about Salat for a sick person. He said: “He performs Salat standing, if he is not able then sitting, if he is not able then on his side.” (Sahih)

RULING ON MAKING MISS PRAYER :-

IF A PERSON MISSES PRAYER ,ONE OF TWO SCENARIOS MUST APPLY:-

HE MISEED IT FOR A REASON, SUCH AS FALLING A SLEEP OR FORGETTING IT.THERE IS NO SIN ON HIM IN THIS CASE, BUT HE HAS TO MAKE IT UP WHEN HE WAKES UP ,REMEMBERS IT.

…………………………………..he (P.B.U.H) said: “Whoever forgets a Salah, let him pray it when he remembers, for Allah says: And perform the prayer for My remembrance.” [Ta-Ha: 14] He (one of the narrators) said: “Ibn Shihab used to recite this Verse as meaning, ‘when you remember’.”

IBN MAJAH (Vol. 1, Book 4, Hadith 697)

……………………… he said: When anyone forgets the prayer, he should observe it when he remembers it, for Allah has said:” And observe the prayer for remembrance of Me” (Qur’an. xx. 14). Yunus said: Ibn Shilab used to recite it like this:” (And observe the prayer) for remembrance.”

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1448)

Narrated Anas:

The Prophet said, “If anyone forgets a prayer he should pray that prayer when he remembers it. There is no expiation except to pray the same.” Then he recited: “Establish prayer for My (i.e. Allah’s) remembrance.” (20.14).

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 1, Book 10, Hadith 571)

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:

‘The Prophet was asked about a man who forgets prayer or sleeps and misses it. He said: ‘he performs it when he remembers it.'” (Sahih)

IBN MAJAH (Vol. 1, Book 4, Hadith 695)

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:

“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever forgets a prayer, let him perform it when he remembers it.'” (Sahih)

IBN MAJAH (Vol. 1, Book 4, Hadith 696)

Qatada reported from Anas b. Malik that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:He who forgets the prayer should say it when he remembers it, there is no explation for it, except this. Qatada said: (Allah says)” And observe prayer for remembrance of Me”

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1454)

Qatada reported it on the authority of Anas b. Malik that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:When any one of you omits the prayer due to sleep or he forgets it, he should observe it when he remembers it, for Allah has said:” Observe prayer for remembrance of Me.”

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1457)

HE MISSED THE PRAYER WITH NO EXCUSE. RATHER HE IGNORED IT UNTIL THE TIME FOR IT ENDED, OUT OF LAZINESS AND CARELESSNESS.THIS PERSON IS SINNING ACCORDING TO THE CONSENSUS OF MUSLIMS,AND HAS COMMITTED A MAJOR SIN.

It is not valid for him to make it up according to the more correct of the two scholarly opinions, rather he has to repent and regret it, and resolve not to do that again, and he should do a lot of good deeds and offer a lot of voluntary prayers.

IBN HAZM :-

As for the one who deliberately omits to pray until the time for the prayer ends, he can never make it up, so he should do a lot of good deeds and offer a lot of voluntary prayers, so that his balance (of good deeds) will weigh heavily on the Day of Resurrection, and he should repent and ask Allaah for forgiveness.

AL-MUHALLA (2/235).

Narrated AbuHurayrah: Anas ibn Hakim ad-Dabbi said that he feared Ziyad or Ibn Ziyad; so he came to Medina and met AbuHurayrah. He attributed his lineage to me and I became a member of his lineage. AbuHurayrah said (to me): O youth, should I not narrate a tradition to you? I said: Why not, may Allah have mercy on you? (Yunus (a narrator) said: I think he narrated it (the tradition) from the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him):) The first thing about which the people will be called to account out of their actions on the Day of Judgment is prayer. Our Lord, the Exalted, will say to the angels – though He knows better: Look into the prayer of My servant and see whether he has offered it perfectly or imperfectly. If it is perfect, that will be recorded perfect. If it is defective, He will say: See there are some optional prayers offered by My servant. If there are optional prayer to his credit, He will say: Compensate the obligatory prayer by the optional prayer for My servant. Then all the actions will be considered similarly.

ABU DAWOOD (Book #3, Hadith #0863)

IBN HAZM :-

Also, Making it up should be based on evidence, and it is not permissible for anything to be prescribed other than by Allaah on the lips of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). We ask those who say that the one who deliberately omits the prayer is obliged to make it up to tell us about this prayer that you are telling him to do – is it the prayer that was enjoined by Allaah or some other prayer? If they say it is the one that was enjoined by Allaah, then we say to them: Then the one who deliberately omits it is not a sinner, because he has done what Allaah commanded him to do and there is no sin according to what you say, and there is no blame on the one who deliberately omits to pray until the time for it ends. But that is something that no Muslim can say. If they say that it is not the prayer that Allaah has enjoined him to do, then we say: You are right, and that is enough, because they have admitted that they told him to do something that was not enjoined by Allaah

AL-MUHALLA (2/236)

THE MORE CORRECT VIEW (ALLAHU ALAM) ALLAH SWT KNOWS BEST,THE ONE WHO DELIBERATELY OMITS THE PRAYER SHOULD NOT MAKE IT UP, RATHER HE HAS TO SEEK FORGIVENESS AND REPENT.
