WEAK OPINION THAT WOMEN SHOULD NT RECITE QUR’AAN IN MENSES,POST-CHILDBIRTH BLEEDING:-

This is one of the issues on which the scholars, may Allaah have mercy on them, differed. The majority of fuqahaa’ say that it is haraam for a woman to recite Qur’aan during her period, until she is taahir (pure) again. The only exceptions they make is in the case of dhikr (remembrance of Allaah) and phrases that are not intended as tilaawah (recitation), such as saying “Bismillaahi’r-Rahmaani’r-Raheem” or “Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji’oon”, or other phrases from the Qur’aan which are repeated as general du’aa’s.

They base their evidence for forbidding menstruating women to recite Qur’aan on several things, including the following:

Menstruation is seen as coming under the rulings that apply to one who is junub (in a state of impurity following sexual intercourse), because both states require ghusl.

Narrated ali ibn AbuTalib: Abdullah ibn Salamah said: I, accompanied by other two persons, one from us and the other from Banu Asad, called upon ali. He sent them to a certain territory (on some mission) saying: You are sturdy and vigorous people; hence display your power for religion. He then stood and entered the toilet. He then came out and called for water and took a handful of it. Then he wiped (his hands) with it and began to recite the Qur’an. They were surprised at this (action). Thereupon he said: “”The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) came out from the privy and taught us the Qur’an and took meat with us. Nothing prevented him; or the narrator said: Nothing prevented him from (reciting) the Qur’an except sexual defilement.”””

ABU DAWOOD (Book #1, Hadith #0229).
SUNAN NASEEI (1/144)
IBN MAAJAH (1/207)
MUSNAD AHMAD ( 1/84).

Ibn Umar narrated that :

the Prophet (p.b.u.h) said: “The menstruating woman does not recite – nor the Junub – anything from the Qur’an.[He said:] There is narration on this topic from Ali (Da’if)

SUNAN TIRMIDHI (Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 131) (DAEEF)

This is a Da’eef hadeeth, because it was reported by Ismaa’eel ibn ‘Ayyaash from the Hijaazis, and his reports from them are da’eef as is well known to those who are conversant with the study of hadeeth.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said (21/460):

It is a da’eef hadeeth by the unanimous agreement of the scholars of hadeeth.

NASB AL-RAAYAH (1/195)
AL TALKHEES AL HABEER (1/183).

MENSTUARATING ,POST-CHILDBIRTH BLEEDING WOMEN CAN RECITE FROM MEMORY, BUT NOT FROM MUSHAF.

This is the opinion of Maalik, and one opinion narrated from Ahmad, which Ibn Taymiyah preferred and which al-Shawkaani believed to be correct. The scholars based the following points on this opinion:

‘A’isha reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be uponhim) would recline in my lap when I was menstruating, and recite the Qur’an.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 3, Hadith 591)

The principle is that things are allowed and permitted unless there is evidence to the contrary. There is no such evidence to say that a menstruating woman is not allowed to recite Qur’aan.Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, commands (Muslims) to recite Qur’aan. He praises the one who does so, and promises him (or her) a great reward. No one is excluded from this except the one concerning whom there is solid evidence (daleel), and there is no such evidence in the case of menstruating women, as stated above.

The analogy between the menstruating woman and the one who is in a state of janaabah is made despite the fact that there are differences between them. The one who is in a state of janaabah has the option of removing the “barrier” by making ghusl, unlike the menstruating woman. A woman’s period usually lasts for some length of time, whereas the person who is in a state of janaabah is required to do ghusl when the time for prayer comes.

Preventing a menstruating woman from reciting Qur’aan deprives her of the chance to earn reward, and it may make her forget something of the Qur’aan, or she may need to recite it for the purposes of teaching or learning.

From the above, it is clear that the evidence of those who allow a menstruating woman to recite Qur’aan from memory, intangible device like computers etc is stronger. If a woman wants to error on the side of caution, she can limit her recitation to the passages which she is afraid of forgetting.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

It is obvious that women used to menstruate at the time of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and he did not forbid them to recite Qur’aan. He also did not forbid them to recite dhikr (remembrance of Allah) or du‘aa’ (supplication). In fact he instructed the menstruating women to go out on the day of Eid and recite takbeer with the Muslims. End quote.

MAJMOO AL FATWAA 21/460

He also said:

There is no Sunnah at all forbidding (the menstruating woman) to recite Qur’aan. Women used to menstruate at the time of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and if reciting was haraam for them, as prayer is, then this would have been one of the things that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade to his ummah, and the Mothers of the Believers would have known of it, and it would have been one of the things that they transmitted to the people. As no one transmitted any such prohibition from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), it is not permissible to make it haraam. It should also be noted that he did not forbid that, and as he did not forbid it, even though there were so many menstruating women at his time, it is known that it is not haraam. End quote.

MAJMOO AL FATWAA 26/191

The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas said:

It is permissible for the menstruating woman to recite from memory without touching the Mushaf directly, if she needs to recite Qur’aan so that she will not forget it.

FATWAAA AL-LAJNAH AD DAAIMAH 4/232

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

It is permissible for the woman who is menstruating or bleeding following childbirth (nifaas) to recite Qur’aan from memory, because these conditions last for a long time, and drawing an analogy between them and the case of one who is junub is incorrect. Based on that, there is nothing wrong with a female student reciting Qur’aan, or a teacher doing so for an exam or otherwise, if it is done from memory and not from the Mushaf. But if one of them needs to read from the Mushaf, there is nothing wrong with that on condition that it be done with a barrier. End quote.

MAJMOO FATWAA IBN BAAZ 6/360.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

It is permissible for the menstruating woman to read Qur’aan from a tafseer (commentary) or otherwise if she is afraid of forgetting what she has memorised. If it is from a tafseer, then it is not stipulated that she should be in a state of purity, but if it is not from a tafseer, rather it is from the Mushaf, then it is essential for her to make a barrier between her and it, such as a handkerchief or gloves and the like, because it is not permissible for the menstruating woman or anyone who is not in a state of purity to touch the Mushaf. End quote.

FATWAA NOOR ALA AD DARD IBN UTHAYMEEN 123/27.

Malik said, “No-one should carry the Qur’an by its strap, or on a cushion, unless he is pure. If it were permissible to do so, it would also have been permissible to carry it in its cover. This is not because there is something on the hands of the one who carries it by which the Qur’an will be soiled, but because it is disapproved of for someone to carry the Qur’an without being pure out of respect for the Qur’an, and in order to honour it.”

MUWATTA MALIK (Book 15, Hadith 2)

MENSTUARATING ,POST-CHILDBIRTH BLEEDING WOMEN SHOULDNOT RECITE QURAN FROM MUSHAF.

When it comes to reading from memory, intangible device like computers etc there is nothing wrong but with regard to Mushaf (the Arabic text itself), a different rule applies. The correct view of the scholars is that it is forbidden to touch the Mushaf when one is in any kind of state of impurity.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Hazm that in a letter that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent to Amr ibn Hazm it said that no-one should touch the Qur’an unless he was pure.

MUWATTA MALIK (Book 15, Hadith 1)

JUNUBI SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WOMEN SHOULD NOT RECITE QURAN FROM MEMORY,MUSHAF TOO.

IT IS NOT PERMISSIBLE FOR WOMEN WHO IS JUNUB (SEXUAL INTERCOURSE) TO READ QURAN FROM MEMORY, FROM MUSHAF UNTIL SHE DOES GHUSL /PURIFY HERSELF.

Nothing prevented him; or the narrator said: Nothing prevented him from (reciting) the Qur’an except sexual defilement.””

ABU DAWOOD (Book #1, Hadith #0229).
SUNAN NASEEI (1/144)
IBN MAAJAH (1/207)
MUSNAD AHMAD ( 1/84).

Ali narrated:

“Allah’s Messenger would recite the Qur’an in all conditions, as long as he was not Junub.” (Hasan)

SUNAN TIRMIDHI (Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 146)

CONCLUSION:-

A WOMEN CAN RECITE QURAAN FROM MEMORY, ANY INTANGIBLE DEVICE SUCH AS COMPUTERS ETC. IN MENSES,POST-CHILDBIRTH BLEEDING.BUT SHE SHOULD NOT RECITE QURAN FROM MUSHAF.

A WOMEN SHOULD NOT RECITE QURAN FROM MEMORY,MUSHAF IN JUNUB (SEXUAL INTERCOURSE)UNTIL SHE DO GHUSL/PURIFY HERSELF.

ALLAH SWT KNOWS BEST.
