1) SLEEP IS ONE OF THE SIGNS OF ALLAH SWT :-

Sleep is one of the signs of Allaah, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And among His Signs is your sleep by night and by day, and your seeking of His Bounty. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who listen”

(SURAH AL ROOM 30 VERSE 23)

And it is He who has made the night as a garment for you, and the sleep as a repose, and He has made the day as the return to life.

(SURAH AL FURQAN 25 VERSE 47)

“See they not that We have made the night for them to rest therein, and the day sight giving? Verily, in this are Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) for the people who believe”

(SURAH AL NAML 27 VERSE 86)

“And We have made your sleep as a thing for rest. And We have made the night as a covering (through its darkness), And We have made the day for livelihood”

(SURAH AL NABA 78 VERSE 11)

IMAM IBN KHATIR SAID :-

Among the signs is that which has been created for you of sleep by night and by day, in which you get rest and stillness, and exhaustion and tiredness are taken away; and wakefulness and striving for one’s livelihood have been ordained during the day.

(TAFSEER IBN KHATEER 6/310)

SHAYKH MUHAMMAD IBN SAALIH AL-UTHAYMEEN SAID :-

“And We have made your sleep as a thing for rest” means: to put an end to tiredness, because sleep puts an end to that which comes before it of tiredness, and a person renews his energy thereby for what lies ahead. Hence you see that if a man becomes tired and sleeps, he is refreshed and his energy is renewed. This is a blessing and it is also one of the signs of Allaah, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And among His Signs is your sleep by night and by day, and your seeking of His Bounty. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who listen”

(SURAH AL ROOM 30 VERSE 23)

2) SUPPLICATION BEFORE SLEEPING, AND MANNERS OF SLEEPING :-

THERE ARE MANY DU’AA’ WHICH PROPHET MUHAMMED (P.B.U.H) USED TO RECITE BEFORE SLEEPING THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS :-

Narrated Abu Dhar:

Whenever the Prophet lay on his bed, he used to say: “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya,” and when he woke up he would say: “Al-hamdu lil-lahilladhi ahyana ba’da ma an atana, wa ilaihi an-nushur.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 8, Book 75, Hadith 337)

Narrated Hudhaifa:

When the Prophet went to bed at night, he would put his hand under his cheek and then say, “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya,” and when he got up, he would say, “Al-Hamdu lil-lahi al-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana, wa ilaihi an-nushur.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 8, Book 75, Hadith 326)

Narrated Al-Bara’ bin `Azib:

When Allah’s Apostle went to bed, he used to sleep on his right side and then say,

Allah’s Apostle said, “Whoever recites these words (before going to bed) and dies the same night, he will die on the Islamic religion (as a Muslim).

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 8, Book 75, Hadith 327)

Narrated Al-Bara bin `Azib:

Allah’s Apostle said to me, “When you want to go to bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie down on your right side and say:

‘Allahumma aslamtu wajhi ilaika, wa fauwadtu `Amri ilaika wa aljatu zahri ilaika, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika, lamalja’a wa la manna mink a ill a ilaika. Amantu bikitabi kalladhi anzalta wa bi nabiyyikal-ladhi arsalta’.

If you should die then (after reciting this) you will die on the religion of Islam (i.e., as a Muslim); so let these words be the last you say (before going to bed)” While I was memorizing it, I said, “Wa birasiulikal-ladhi arsalta (in Your Apostle whom You have sent).’ The Prophet said, “No, but say: Wa binabiyyi-kalladhi arsalta (in Your Prophet whom You have sent).

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 8, Book 75, Hadith 323)

Suhail reported that Abu Salih used to command us (in these words):

When any one of you intends to go to sleep, he should lie on the bed on his right side and then say:”

O Allah. the Lord of the Heavens and the Lord of the Earth and Lord of the Magnificent Throne, our Lord, and the Lord of evervthina, the Splitter of the grain of corn and the datestone (or fruit kernal), the Revealer of Torah and Injil (Bible) and Criterion (the Holy Qur’an), I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of every- thing Thou art to sieze by the forelock (Thou hast perfect control over it). O Allah, Thou art the First, there is naught before Thee, and Thou art the Last and there is naught after Thee, and Thou art Evident and there is nothing above Thee, and Thou art Innermost and there is nothing beyond Thee. Remove the burden of debt from us and relieve us from want.” Abu Salih used to narrate it from Abu Huraira who narrated it from Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him).

When the Prophet came, Aisha informed him about Fatima’s visit. `Ali added “So the Prophet came to us, while we had gone to our bed I wanted to get up but the Prophet said, “Remain at your place”. Then he sat down between us till I found the coolness of his feet on my chest. Then he said, “Shall I teach you a thing which is better than what you have asked me? When you go to bed, say, ‘Allahu-Akbar’ thirty-four times, and ‘Subhan Allah thirty-three times, and ‘Al hamdu-li l-lah thirty-three times for that is better for you both than a servant.”

3) SLEEPING IN A STATE OF TAHAARAH (PURITY). :-

Narrated Mu’adh ibn Jabal:The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said: If a Muslim sleeps while emembering Allah, in the state of purification, is alarmed while asleep at night, and asks Allah for good in this world and in the Hereafter. He surely gives it to him.

Umar, who said that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), Can any one of us sleep when he is junub? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Yes, but let him do wudoo’ if he wishes.”

IBN HIBBBAN (HADITH 232)

‘A’isha reported:

Whenever the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) intended to sleep after having sexual intercourse, he performed ablution as for the prayer before going to sleep.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 3, Hadith 597)

Ibn ‘Umar said:

‘Umar asked the verdict of the Shari’ah from the Apostle (may peace be upon him) thus: Is it permissible for any one of us to sleep in a state of impurity? He (the Holy Prophet said: Yes, he must perform ablution and then sleep and take a bath when he desires.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 3, Hadith 601)

Some- times he took a bath and then slept, and sometimes he performed ablution only and went to sleep. I (the narrator) said: Praise be to Allah Who has made things easy (for human beings).

5) DUST OFF THE BED BEFORE SLEEPING :

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “When anyone of you goes to bed, he should dust it off thrice with the edge of his garment, and say: Bismika Rabbi Wada`tu janbi, wa bika arfa’hu. In amsakta nafsi faghfir laha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfaz bihi ‘ibadaka-s-salihin.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 9, Book 93, Hadith 490)

AN-NAWAWI SAID :-

The inside of his lower garment” means its edge. What is meant is that it is mustahabb to dust down his bed before lying on it, lest there be a snake or scorpion or other harmful thing in it. And he should dust it down with his hand covered by the edge of his lower garment, lest something bad happen to his hand if there is anything there.Hence it is known that dusting down the bed is to be done when one wants to sleep, and it may be done with the edge of one’s garment or something else. And Allaah knows best.

6) SEPARATE CHILDREN IN THEIR BEDS AT THE AGE OF 10 :-

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As:

The Apostle of Allah () said: Command your children to pray when they become seven years old, and beat them for it (prayer) when they become ten years old; and arrange their beds (to sleep) separately.

ABU DAWOOD (Book 2, Hadith 495)

Narrated from Sabrah ibn Ma’bad that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said: “When your children reach the age of seven, separate their beds and when they reach the age of 10 years, smack them if they do not pray.”

(AT-DARAQTUNI,AL HAAKIM ,SAHEEH AL-JAAMI 418)

NOTE :-

This separation of children includes all children: males with males and with females; and females with females and with males. If separating between them is obligatory when they are at this age, then it is even more essential after that, because desire grows more intense. This hadeeth is a response to those who say that there is no desire among mahrams, and it is what motivated some scholars to say it is allowed for an adult male to sleep in the same bed as his mother or his father. But the correct view is something other than this. The one who ponders how things are nowadays will not doubt that the correct way is to prevent that, and that the hadeeth includes a grown son sleeping in the same bed as his mother or his father, and a grown daughter sleeping in the same bed as her mother or her father

AN-NAWAWI SAID :-

It is not permissible for a man to lie down with a man or for a woman to lie down with a woman, even if one is on one side of the bed. When boys and girls reach the age of ten years, it is essential to separate the boy from his mother, father, sister and brother when sleeping.

(RAWDAT AL-TAALIBEEN 7/28)

IBN HAJAR ASQALANI SAID :-

Concerning a group of people sleeping in one bed: It has been proven by other ways that it is essential that they do not share one blanket.

(FATH UL BAARI 7/204)

IBN AABDEEN AL HANAFI SAID :-

In al-Bazaariyyah it says: When the boy reaches the age of ten, he should not sleep in the same bed as his mother or his sister or any woman other than his wife. What is meant is that they should be separated when sleeping for fear of falling into haraam actions. When a boy reaches the age of ten, he understands sex but has no religious commitment to keep him away from it, and if he sleeps in the same bed he may end up being intimate with his sister or his mother. Sleep is a time of rest and provocation of desire, in which the garments are removed from the ‘awrah by both parties, so it may lead to haraam things and haraam intimacy, especially in these times when they know more of immorality than adults do!

(HAASHIYAT IBN AABDEEN 6/382)

SOME ADVICE IF BROTHER AND SISTER SLEEPING IN SAME ROOM :-

There is nothing wrong with a man sleeping in the same room as his sister, each in his or her own bed, so long as nothing can be see of their ‘awrahs. In the case of her brother or other mahrams, the woman’s ‘awrah is all of her body except that which is normally visible such as the neck, head, hands, feet and calves. His ‘awrah with regard to her is the area between the navel and the knee. But both of them must take precautions when going to sleep, by wearing something that will cover their ‘awrahs and prevent them from becoming uncovered. Because sleeping is a time when the ‘awrah is likely to be uncovered and desire may be provoked, Islam enjoined separating children in their beds as Stated in above hadith of

When the siblings reach the age of ten years, whether they are male or female, or both male and female, their guardian should separate them in their beds and give each one of them a bed of his or her own, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “And separate them in their beds” i.e., as they used to sleep naked, as it says in al-Mustaw’ab and al-Ri’aayah

(KASHSHAAF AL-QINAA 5/18)

IBN MUFLIH SAID :-

A boy who reaches the age of ten should be prevented from sleeping naked with his sister or any other mahram. This was mentioned in al-Mustaw’ab and al-Ri’aayah. This – and Allaah knows best – was narrated from Ahmad and was the view favoured by Abu Bakr. It was also stated and favoured by most of our companions that children must be separated when they are seven years old or more, and that (a child of that age) has an ‘awrah which he must guard. This issue is well known and is mentioned in Kitaab al-Janaa’iz.

(AL-ADAAB AL SHARIYYAH 3/538)

7) PROHIBITION ON SLEEPING ON ONE’S STOMACH :

The haadeeth which speak of the prohibition on sleeping on one’s stomach vary in their degree of soundness. Some scholars classed them as da’eef (weak) such as al-Bukhaari, al-Daaraqutni, Ibn Abi Haatim and Ibn Rajab, and others classed them as saheeh or hasan, such as Ahmad Shaakir in Tahqeeq al-Musnad (14/248-249) and al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

Narrated Takhfah ibn Qays al-Ghifaari said: When I was lying on my stomach in the mosque just before dawn, a man nudged me with his foot and said: “This manner of lying is hated by Allaah.” I looked and saw that it was the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

ABU DAWOOD (Book 43, Hadith 268)

Narrated from Ibn Takhfah al-Ghifaari that Abu Dharr said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by me and I was lying on my stomach. He kicked me with his foot and said: “O Junaydib! This is how the people of Hell lie.”

IBN MAJAH (HADITH 3724)

8) RULING ON SLEEPING WITH ONE FEET TOWARDS THE QIBLAH ? :-

SHAYKH UTHAYMEEN SAID :-

There is no sin on a person if he sleep with his feet towards the Ka’bah, rather the fuqaha’ (may Allaah have mercy on them) said: if a sick person cannot stand or sit, he should pray lying on his side with his face towards the qiblah, and if he cannot then he should pray on his back with his feet towards the qiblah.” Allah knows Best

(FATAAWA IBN UTHAYMEEN 2/976)

________________________________________________________________________________________

9) RULING ON SLEEPING AFTER FAJR AND ASAR ? :-

Praise be to Allah. As far as a person’s sleeping after praying Fajr is concerned, no text (of Qur’aan or hadeeth) has been reported to indicate that this is prohibited. But the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his Companions after praying Fajr was to remain sitting in the place where they had prayed until the sun rose.

Simak b. Harb reported:I said to Jabir b. Samura: Did you sit in the company of the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him)? He said: Yes, very often. He (the Holy Prophet) used to sit at the place where he observed the morning or dawn prayer till the sun rose or when it had risen; he would stand, and they (his Companions) would talk about matters (pertaining to the days) of ignorance, and they would laugh (on these matters) while (the Holy Prophet) only smiled.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1413)

Simak narrated on the authority of Jabir b. Samura that when the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed the dawn prayer, he sat at the place of worship till the sun had risen enough.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1414)
SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1415)

Also,The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked his Lord to bless his ummah in the mornings, as is reported in the hadeeth,

Narrated ‘Umarah bin Hadid:

From Shakr Al-Ghamidi that the Messenger of Allah () said: “O Allah bless my Ummah in what they do early (in the day).” He said: “Whenever he () would dispatch a military expedition or an army, he would send them in the first part of the day.”And Sakhr, a man who was a merchant, used to send his goods for trade during the beginning of the day, so he became rich, and his wealth increased.

SUNAN TIRMIDHI (Book 10, Hadith 11)

For this reason some of the salaf disliked the idea of sleeping after Fajr.

Narratted ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr that he said: “Al-Zubayr used to forbid his children to sleep in the morning.” ‘Urwah said: “I do not hear of any man who sleeps in the morning, but I lose interest in that person.”

MUSANNAF ABI SHAYBAH (5/222,25442)

In summary then, people should make the most of this time which can bring many benefits in this world and in the Hereafter, but if a person sleeps at this time to gain strength to do his work, there is nothing wrong with this, especially if it is not easy for him to sleep at any other time of the day.

Narrated Abu Yazeed al-Madeeni who said: “Umar came to Suhayb one morning and found him sleeping, so he sat down until he woke up. Suhayb said: ‘The Ameer al-Mu’mineen is sitting in his place and Suhayb is sleeping!’ ‘Umar said to him: ‘I did not like to disturb your sleep that could be beneficial for you.’”

MUSANNAF ABI SHAYBAY (5/223,25454)

As for sleeping after ‘Asr, this is also permitted; there is no saheeh hadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to indicate that sleeping at this time is prohibited. As for the words, “Whoever sleeps after ‘Asr and loses his mind as a result has no-one to blame but himself,” which are attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), this is a false hadeeth and there is no proof that these words were uttered by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). See: Silsilat al-Da’eefah, no. 39.

________________________________________________________________________________________

10) BAD DREAM OR NIGHTMARE :-

If someone seen a bad dream so he/she should spit three times on left side :-

Narrated Abu Qatada:

The Prophet said, “A good dream that comes true is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan, so if anyone of you sees a bad dream, he should seek refuge with Allah from Satan and should spit on the left, for the bad dream will not harm him.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 9, Book 87, Hadith 115)

Jabir reported the Apostle of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying :When one of you sees a vision which he dislikes, he must spit on his left (three times), seek refuge in Allah from the devil three times, and turn from the side on which he was lying.

ABU DAWOOD (Book 42, Hadith 5004)

Abu Hurarirah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:
“Dreams are of three types: The true dream, dreams about something that has happened to the man himself, and dreams in which the Shaitan frightens someone. So whoever sees what he dislikes, then he should get up and perform Salah.”

Then he went to a hanging water skin and took it, performed the ablution and then stood up to offer the prayer. I got up and did the same as he had done, and stood beside him. He put his hand on my head and held me by the ear and twisted it. He offered two rak`at, then two rak`at, then two rak`at, then two rak`at, then two rak`at, then two rak`at, and finally the witr (i.e. one rak`a) prayer
