1) THE COMMANDS MENTIONED IN QURAN AND SUNNAH TO FOLLOW THE LAWS OF ALLAH SWT AND HIS MESSENGER.

The commands mentioned in the Qur’aan and Sunnah to follow the laws of Allaah and His Messenger.

Say (O Muhammad to mankind): ‘If you (really) love Allaah, then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur’aan and the Sunnah), Allaah will love you and forgive you your sins’”

(SURAH Al-IMRAN 3:31)

He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad ), has indeed obeyed Allah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad ) as a watcher over them.

(SURAH NISA 4 VERSE 80)

And let those who oppose the Messenger’s (Muhammad’s) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.

(SURAH AN-NUR 24 VERSE 63)

The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allah (His Words, the Qur’an) and His Messenger (), to judge between them, is that they say: “We hear and we obey.” And such are the prosperous ones (who will live forever in Paradise).

(SURAH AN-NUR 24 VERSE 51)

There is indeed the best example for you to follow in the Messenger of Allah (Mohamed saws), for every such person who looks forward to Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.

(SURAH AL AHZAB 33 VERSE 21)

Narrated `Abdullah: The best talk (speech) is Allah’s Book ‘Qur’an, and the best way is the way of Muhammad, and the worst matters are the heresies (those new things which are introduced into the religion); and whatever you have been promised will surely come to pass, and you cannot escape (it).

SAHIH BUKHARI (Volume 9:: Book 92:: Hadith 382)

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “All my followers will enter Paradise except those who refuse.” They said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Who will refuse?” He said, “Whoever obeys mewill enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it).

SAHIH BUKHARI (Volume 9:: Book 92:: Hadith 384)

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said, “Leave me as I leave you for the people who were before you were ruined because of their questions and their differences over their prophets. So, if I forbid you to do something, then keep away from it. And if I order you to do something, then do of it as much as you can.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Volume 9::Book #92, Hadith #391)

Yahya related to me from Malik that he heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “I have left two matters with you. As long as you HOLD to them, you will not go the wrong way. They are the Book of Allah and the SUNNA of His Prophet.”

MUWATTA MALIK (Book #46, Hadith #46.1.3)

Narrated Anas ibn Malik

He (p.b.u.h) said who loves my Sunnah,in fact loves me and he who loves me, will be with me in Paradise.

SUNAN TIRMIDHI (HADITH 175)

That basically means that anybody who looks forward to Allah and the Last Day should try to follow the example of the Prophet Mohamed (saws). The command is good for only people who fear Allah and the Last Day. and not for someone who does not fear Allah and the Last Day.If we claim to believe in Allah and the Last Day, then we must try and do everything the Prophet (saws) did, and stay away from everything that the Prophet (saws) stayed away from, as that could not be part of religion or a wholesome Islamic life, as Allah clearly states in the above verse of Al Ahzab verse 31. The Prophet (saws) is the best example for us to follow .

2) DEFINITION OF BEARD. :-

Praise be to Allaah. The beard is the hair that grows on the cheeks and chin.

IBN MANZOOR SAID QUOTING FROM IBN SAYYIDIH :-

Lihyah (beard) includes the hair that grows on the cheeks and the chin.

(LISAAN AL-ARAB, 15/243)

The hair that grows on the bones that are level with the channel of the ear – the cheekbones – is part of the beard and it is not permissible to pluck it or shave it.

SHAYKH MUHAMMAD IBN SAALIH AL-‘UTHAYMEEN WAS ASKED ABOUT WHAT IS MEANT BY THE BEARD. HE REPLIED:

The extent of the beard is from the cheekbones, level with the channel of the ears, until the bottom of the face. It includes the hair that grows on the cheeks.

(MAJMOO FATAAWA IBN UTHAYMEEN, 11/QUESTION NO. 49 )

Lihyah (beard) is the hair of the cheeks and chin.

(AL-QAAMOOS AL-MUHEET PAGE 387)

SHAYKH IBN BAAZ SAID :-

The beard (al-lahyah) is that which grows on the cheeks and chin, as was explained by the author of al-Qaamoos. It is obligatory to leave the hair that grows on the cheeks and chin, and not to shave it or cut it.May Allaah reform the affairs of all the Muslims.

(FATAAWA ISLAMIYYAH 2/325)

SHAYKH IBN ‘UTHAYMEEN SAID :-

The definition of the beard (al-lahyah) as stated by the scholars of the (Arabic) language is the hair of the face, jawbone and cheeks, in the sense that everything that grows on the cheeks, jawbone and chin is part of the beard.

(FATAAWA HAMMAH PAGE 36 )

(AL-FUROO 1/130)

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar:

That the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: “Trim the mustache and let the beard grow.” (Sahih)

The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 2, Hadith 501)

The narrator said: I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have been rinsing the mouth.

4) RULING ON SHAVING,TRIMMING BEARD. :-

The command to let the beard grow is narrated in many saheeh ahaadeeth which were narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) , which indicates that it is obligatory to let the beard grow and it is haraam to shave it.

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar:

That the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: “Trim the mustache and let the beard grow.” (Sahih)

SUNAN NASEEI (Vol. 6, Book 2, Hadith 5048)
SUNAN NASEEI (Vol. 6, Book 2, Hadith 5049)
SUNAN NASEEI (Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 15)
ABU DAWOOD (Book 34, Hadith 4187)
SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 2, Hadith 498)
SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 2, Hadith 499)

Narrated Ibn `Umar:

Allah’s Apostle said, “Cut the moustaches short and leave the beard (as it is)

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 7, Book 72, Hadith 781)

IMAAM IBN ABDL AL-BARR SAID :-

“It is forbidden to shave the beard, and no one does this except men who are effeminate” i.e., those who imitate women.

(AL-TAMHEED)

SHAYKH IBN UTHAYMEEN SAID :-

Cutting anything from the beard goes against the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) who said: “Leave the beard alone”, “Let the beard grow,” etc. Whoever wants to follow the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and follow his teaching should not remove anything from his beard at all, because the teaching of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is that nothing should be removed from the beard. This was also the way of the Prophets before him.

(FATAAWA IBN UTHAYMEEN, 11/126)

NOTE :-

Shaving the beard or trimming something from its thickness and length, this is not permissible because it goes against the teachings of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his command to let the beard grow. A command implies that a thing is obligatory unless there is an indication to suggest otherwise, and we know of no such indication in this case.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5) SOME SCHOLAR DALEEL CUTTING HANDFUL OF BEARD IS PERMSSIBLE, & THEIR RESPONSE.

Letting the beard grow is leaving it alone and not cutting it, so that it will grow thick. This is the teaching of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as regards his words and commands to others.

jabir b. Samura reported that there had appeared some whiteness on the front part of the head and beard of Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him). When he applied oil, it did not become visible, but when he did not (apply) oil, it became apparent. And he had a thick beard. A person said: His face was as (bright) as the sword. Thereupon he (jabir) said: No, it was round and like the sun and the moon. And I saw the seal near his shoulder of the size of a pigeon’s egg and its color was the same as that of his body.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book #030, Hadith #5789)

With regard to his own actions, there is no report that says that he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) removed anything from his beard. With regard to the hadeeth narrated by tirmidhi .

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to take something off the side and the bottom of his beard.

SUNAN TIRMIDHI (HADITH 4439)

RESPONSE :-

IMAM TIRMIDHI HIMSELF SAID :-

Hadeet is Daeef.

(SUNAN TIRMIDHI 2762)

IMAM AL-NAWAWI SAID :-

Daeef.

(MAJMOO 1/290)

IBN HAJAR ASQALANI SAID :-

‘Umar ibn Haroon who is matrook (rejected)

(FATH UL-BARI 10/363)

MUBARAKFOORI SAID :-

Jiddan (Very Weak).

(TAHFATUL AHZAWI 7/188)

ALBANI SAID :-

Mawdoo.

(DAEEF TIRMIDHI 2762,SILSILAH DAEEFA 288)

IBN QASRANI SAID :-

Umar Ibn haroon is weak.

(ZAQRATUL HAFIZ 2/825)

MANAWI SAID :-

Dahabi said Umar Ibn haroon is mawdoo (rejected).

(TAKHRIJUL HADEES MASABIH 4/56)

NOTE :-

HENCE IT IS KNOWN THAT THIS HADEETH IS NOT SAHEEH AND CANNOT BE USED AS EVIDENCE TO OPPOSE THE SAHEEH HADEETHS WHICH INDICATE THAT IT IS OBLIGATORY TO LEAVE THE BEARD ALONE AND LET IT GROW.

Some of the scholars are of the view that it is permissible to remove anything more than a “handful” of the beard [the hair of the beard that comes beneath the hand if the beard is seized in the hand, basing that on the action of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him).

Narrated Nafi`:

Ibn `Umar said, The Prophet said, ‘Do the opposite of what the pagans do. Keep the beards and cut the moustaches short.’ Whenever Ibn `Umar performed the Hajj or `Umra, he used to hold his beard with his hand and cut whatever moustaches. Ibn `Umar used to cut his moustache so short that the whiteness of his skin (above the upper lip) was visible, and he used to cut (the hair) between his moustaches and his beard.

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 7, Book 72, Hadith 780)

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to trim his beard and moustache when he shaved at the end of a hajj or umra.

MUWATTA MALIK (Book 20, Hadith 196)

RESPONSE :-

SHAYKH IBN BAAZ SAID :-

Whoever quotes the action of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) to show that he used to cut whatever of his beard was longer than the “handful” during Hajj cannot use this as evidence, because this is ijtihaad on the part of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), and proof is to be found in reports (from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)), not from ijtihaad. The scholars (may Allaah have mercy on them) clearly stated that the reports from the Sahaabah and those who came after them that are proven to be sound are what constitute evidence and proof, and they take precedence over any opinion if it goes against the Sunnah.

(FATAAWA WA MAQAALAAT AL-SHAYKH IBN BAAZ 8/370)

SHAYKAH ABD AL-RAHMAAN IBN QAASIM SAID :-

Some scholars granted a concession allowing removal of whatever is longer than the “handful”, based on the actions of Ibn ‘Umar, but most of the scholars regard that as makrooh. This is more correct, for the reasons stated above. Al-Nawawi said: The preferred view is that the beard should be left as it is and should not be shortened in any way at all… and it says in al-Durr al-Mukhtaar: with regard to cutting it any shorter than the “handful”, no one said that this is permissible.

(TAHREEM HALQ AL-LAYAH PROHIBITION ON SHAVING THE BEARD PAGE 11)

6) ONE SHOULD BEAUTIFY HIS BEARD. :-

Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that Ata ibn Yasar told him that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was in the mosque when a man came in with dishevelled hair and beard. The Messenger of Allah. may Allah bless him and grant him peace, motioned with his hand that he should be sent out to groom his hair and beard. The man did so and then returned. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Isn’t this better than that one of you should come with his head dishevelled, as if he were a shaytan?”

MUWATTA MALIK (Book #51, Hadith #51.2.7)

Narrated jabir ibn Abdullah: The Apostle of Allah (p.b.u.h) paid visit to us, and saw a dishevelled man whose hair was disordered. He said: Could this man not find something to make his hair lie down? He saw another man wearing dirty clothes and said: Could this man not find something to wash his garments with.

ABU DAWOOD (Book #32, Hadith #4051)
