1) PRAYING FOR THE NEWBORN BABY TO BE SAFE & SOUND,TO BE GUIDED. :-

There is no action prescribed in sharee’ah for preparing to welcome a new baby a day or two before he is born, as far as we know. But one can recite general du’aa’s, such as praying for the newborn to be safe and sound, to be guided, and so on. Allaah mentioned in His Book the prayer of the righteous woman, the wife of ‘Imraan, who said (interpretation of the meaning):

(Remember) when the wife of ‘Imraan said: ‘O my Lord! I have vowed to You what (the child that) is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services (free from all worldly work; to serve Your place of worship), so accept this from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing.’

Then when she gave birth to her [child Maryam (Mary)], she said: ‘O my Lord! I have given birth to a female child,’ — and Allaah knew better what she brought forth, — ‘And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam (Mary), and I seek refuge with You (Allaah) for her and for her offspring from Shaytaan (Satan), the outcast.

(SURAH AL-IMRAAN 3 VERSE 35-36)

2) IT IS MUSTAHABB TO DO TAHNEEK FOR THE BABY AND TO PRAY FOR HIM/HER. :-

Narrated Abu Musa:

A son was born to me and I took him to the Prophet who named him Ibrahim, did Tahnik for him with a date, invoked Allah to bless him and returned him to me. (The narrator added: That was Abu Musa’s eldest son.)

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 7, Book 66, Hadith 376)
SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 25, Hadith 5343)

Narrated Abu Musa:

I got a son and I took him to the Prophet who named him Ibrahim, and put in his mouth the juice of a date fruit (which be himself had chewed?, and invoked for Allah’s blessing upon him, and then gave him back to me. He was the eldest son of Abii Musa.

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 8, Book 73, Hadith 218)
ADAB UL MUFRAD ( Book 1, Hadith 30)

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

I took `Abdullah bin Abu Talha to Allah’s Apostle to perform Tahnik for him. (Tahnik was a custom among the Muslims that whenever a child was born they used to take it to the Prophet who would chew a piece of date and put a part of its juice in the child’s mouth). I saw the Prophet and he had an instrument for branding in his hands and was branding the camels of Zakat.

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 2, Book 24, Hadith 578)

NOTE :-

Tahnik means putting something sweet, such as dates or honey, in the child’s mouth when he is first born.

3) IT IS PERMISSIBLE TO NAME THE CHILD ON THE FIRST DAY OR ON THE SEVENTH DAY. :-

Anas b. Malik reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:A child was born into me this night and I named him after the name of my father Ibrihim.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 30, Hadith 5733)

It was narrated from Qatadah, from Al-Hasan, from Samurh bin Jundab that the Messenger of Allah said:”Every boy is in pledge for his ‘Aqiqah, so slaughter (the animal) for him on the seventh day, and shave his head, and a name” (Hasan)

SUNAN NASEEI (Vol. 5, Book 4, Hadith 4225)

Narrated Samurah:

That the Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) said: “The boy is mortgaged by his ‘Aqiqah; slaughtering should be done for him on the seventh day, he should be given a name, and his head should be shaved.”

SUNAN TIRMIDHI (Book 15, Hadith 34)
SUNAN TIRMIDHI (Book 15, Hadith 35)
ABU DAWOOD (Book 15, Hadith 2832)

It was reported that ‘Aa’ishah said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did ‘aqeeqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn on the seventh day, and gave them their names.

4) ADHAAN SHOULD BE RECITED IN BABY RIGHT EAR. :-

The ruling on performing Adhan in the right ear of newly born babies are preferred according to many scholars, based on the Ijmaa and a hadith Scholar differed regarding the authenticity of hadeet,as some scholar classed them hasan, while on the other hand other scholar classed them daeef (weak).

Narrated ‘Ubaidullah bin Abi Rafi’:

That his father said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) say the Adhan in the ear of Al-Hasan bin ‘Ali – when he was born to Fatimah – the Adhan of Salat.”

SUNAN TIRMIDHI (Vol. 3, Book 17, Hadith 1514)
ABU DAWOOD (Book 41, Hadith 5086)

IMAM TIRMIDHI SAID :-

Hasan.

(SUNAN TIRMIDHI 1514)

IBNE MULQEEN SAID :-

Hadees Hasan.

(TAHFATUL MUHTAZ 2/539)

IMAM NAWAWI SAID :-

Sahih.

(MAJMOO 8/434)

THOSE SCHOLAR WHO CLASSED ABOVE HADEES DAEEF.

MUBARAKFOORI SAID :-

Daeef.

(TUHFATUL AWADH 4/455)

IMAM ALBANI SADI :-

daeef.

(SUNAN TIRMIDHI 1514,ABU DAWOOD 5105,AL-KALIM AT-TAYYAB 211 )

Majority of the scholars classified this Hadith as weak because of (A’sim Bin O’baid Allah) who was classified as weak, Another chain which been quoted by Ibn Hajr al Asqalani in Matalib al Aliya, Chapter of Aqiqathen is also weak because of the narrator Yahya ibn al-‘Alaa who is Matrook Muttaham bil Kadhib.

And thus, there is no saheeh Hadith to state that the Prophet ( p.b.u.h ) gave either the Adhan or Iqama in the ear of Hussain (r.a) or Hassan (r.a). Some say it was an act that was done by Umar bin Abdulaziz and Ibn Al-Munthir (May Allah be pleased with them) and by some of the salaaf. However, despite the absence of a saheeh hadith, there is an ijmah of the ummah that adhan in the ear of a new born baby can be given.

IMAAM SUYUTI SAID :-

This action has Talqi bil Qabool (Ijmaa) even if the chain of this hadeeth is not Saheeh

(TADREEB AR-RAAWI 1/66)

Scholars like Imam Malik and Al-Shabramalsi al-Shaafa‘i (may Allah have mercy on him) (See Nihaayat al-Muhtaaj, 8/149) have agreed to this lso see Haashiyat al-Tablaawi ‘ala Tuhfat al-Muhtaaj, 1/461)

IMAM TIRMIDHI SAID :-

Imam tirmidhi in his sunan while mentioning the hadeeth, said “and this is practice upon” meaning that this practice of Adhan was practiced during the Muslims of his time and their predecessor and even Mubarakpoori agreed to this. Thus one can say the adhan in the ear of a new born because there is an ijmah on it.

IMAM MUSLIM SAID :-

Imam Muslim writes under Book # 4,Hadith 1995, kitab-ul-jana’iz (Book related to the Dead).A Muslim is received in this world with Adhan and lqama and he is given a send- off with prayer and supplication to Allah for treating him kindly in his heavenly home. There is neither Adhan nor Iqama in the funeral prayer which has very deep significance. It implies that the Adhan and lqama for the funeral prayer had been pronounced at the time of his birth.

NOTE :-

Iqaamah is not proven.

HADEET REGARDING RECITING IQAAMAH IN LEFT EAR. :-

Hadith wherein it is said that the prophet (s.a.w) gave the Iqaamah in the ear…. Has been classified by the Jumhoor to be da’eef. Albani who had said earlier that this iqamaah is shaadh and is da’eef in Silsilatul Ahaadeeth Ad-Da’eefah #321 and Al-‘Irwaa’ #1174, later on in his latest work as informed by one of his students, retracted his decision and changed da’eef to Mawdoo’ and Allah knows best.

5) CIRCUMCISION. :-

Circumcision is part of the Sunan al-Fitrah (practices related to the pure and natural inclinations of man). It is obligatory in the case of boys because it is connected to matters of purity which are essential conditions of prayer.

Abu Huraira reported:

Five are the acts of fitra: circumcision, removing the pubes, clipping the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking the hair under the armpits.

It was narrated that Talq bin Habib said:

“Ten things are from the Sunnah: Using the Siwak, trimming the mustache, rinsing the mouth, rinsing the nose, letting the beard grow, trimming the nails, plucking the armpit hairs, circumcision, shaving the pubes and washing one’s backside.” (Sahih)

SUNAN NASEEI (Vol. 6, Book 2, Hadith 5045)

TIME FOR CIRCUMCISION :-

It is better for circumcision to be done when the child is small, because that is kinder to the child, and so that the child may grow up in a perfect form.

AL-NAWAWI SAID : –

It is mustahabb for the child’s guardian to have him circumcised when he is small, because that is kinder to him.

(AL-MAJMOO 1/351)

Narrated that Jaabir said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did ‘aqeeqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and he circumcised them when they were seven days old.

SHAYKH AL-ISLAM IBN TAYMIYAH SAID : –

With regard to circumcision, whenever he wants he can be circumcised, but if he is approaching the age of puberty he should be circumcised as the Arabs used to do, to make sure he does not reach puberty when he is not circumcised.

(AL-FATAAWA AL-KUBRA, 1/275)

6) SHAVING THE CHILD HEAD,SMEARING THE HEAD WITH SAFFRON. :-

Shaving the child head,Smearing the head with saffron should be done on seventh day.

Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib:

When a boy was born to one of us in the pre-Islamic period, we sacrificed a sheep and smeared his head with its blood; but when Allah brought Islam, we sacrificed a sheep, shaved his head and smeared his head with saffron.

ABU DAWOOD (Book 15, Hadith 2837)

Narrated Muhammad bin ‘Ali bin Al-Husain:

That Ali bin Abi Talib said: “The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) had the ‘Aqiqah for Al-Hasan with one sheep, and said: ‘O Fatimah! Shave his head and give the weight of his hair in silver as charity.'” He said: “So I weighed it, and it was the weight of a Dirham or a bit of a Dirham.”

SUNAN TIRMIDHI (Book 15, Hadith 31)

Yahya related to me from Malik from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman that Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn said, “Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, weighed the hair of Hasan and Husayn, and gave away in sadaqa the equivalent weight in silver.

MUWATTA MALIK (Book 26, Hadith 3)

NOTE :-

Shaving the child’s head then anointing the child’s head with saffron is very beneficial. Then it is prescribed to give in charity gold or silver equal in weight to the hair. This does not have to be done by actually weighing the hair; if it is too difficult to do that, it is sufficient to estimate the weight and give paper currency equivalent to the price of that amount of gold or silver.
