IS IT PERMISSIBLE FOR A WOMAN TO SLAUGHTER AN ANIMAL, & CAN THE MEAT OF AN ANIMAL SHE SLAUGHTERS BE EATEN ?
1) EVIDENCE FROM QURAN.
2) EVIDENCE FROM SUNNAH.
3) EVIDENCE FROM SCHOLAR.
1) EVIDENCE FROM QURAN. :-
The scholars of Islam are agreed that it is permissible for woman to slaughter an animal, and it is permissible to eat the meat of an animal slaughtered by a woman, because of the general terms used in the wording of the Qur’aan and Sunnah. Among the evidence that it is permissible are the following:
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin – then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
(SURAH MAIDAH 5 VERSE 3)
The evidence in this aayah is the phrase where Allaah has permitted us to eat of any animal that we are able to slaughter before it dies; this is general in application, and does not specify as to whether the person who manages to do this is a man or a woman
2) EVIDENCE FROM SUNNAH. :-
Narrated Ibn Ka`b bin Malik from his father:
We had some sheep which used to graze at Sala’. One of our slavegirls saw a sheep dying and she broke a stone and slaughtered the sheep with it. My father said to the people, “Don’t eat it till I ask the Prophet about it (or till I send somebody to ask the Prophet).” So, he asked or sent somebody to ask the Prophet, and the Prophet permitted him to eat it. ‘Ubaidullah (a sub-narrator) said, “I admire that girl, for though she was a slave-girl, she dared to slaughter the sheep . ”
SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 3, Book 38, Hadith 500)
that a slave girl of theirs used to shepherd some sheep at Si’a (a mountain near Medina). On seeing one of her sheep dying, she broke a stone and slaughtered it. Ka`b said to his family, “Do not eat (of it) till I go to the Prophet and ask him, or, till I send someone to ask him.” So he went to the Prophet or sent someone to him The Prophet permitted (them) to eat it.
SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 7, Book 67, Hadith 409)
that Ka`b had a slave girl who used to graze his sheep on a small mountain, called “Sl’a”, situated near the market. Once a sheep was dying, so she broke a stone and slaughtered it with it. When they mentioned that to the Prophet, he, permitted them to eat it.
SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 7, Book 67, Hadith 410)
Narrated Ka`b bin Malik: A lady slaughtered a sheep with a
stone and then the Prophet was asked about it and he permitted
it to be eaten.
SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 7, Book 67, Hadith 412)
Narrated Mu`adh bin Sa`d or Sa`d bin Mu`adh:
A slave girl belonging to Ka`b used to graze some sheep at Sl’a (mountain). Once one of her sheep was dying. She reached it (before it died) and slaughtered it with a stone. The Prophet was asked, and he said, “Eat it.”
SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 7, Book 67, Hadith 413)
IBN HAJAR SAID :-
“This shows that it is permitted to eat meat slaughtered by a woman, whether she is free or a slave, old or young, Muslim or of the People of the Book (i.e., Jewish or Christian), in a state of purity or otherwise, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told them to eat the meat she had slaughtered and did not ask for further details.”
3) EVIDENCE FROM SCHOLAR. :-
SHAYKH AL-ISLAM IBN TAYMIYAH SAID : –
“It is permitted to eat from an animal which a man or a woman slaughters Islamically before it dies, or from meat slaughtered by a woman, even if she is menstruating, because her menstruation is not in her hand. It is permissible to eat meat from an animal which a woman slaughters Islamically before it dies, by the consensus of the Muslims.”
4) CONCLUSION. :-
The discussion above also makes it clear that a woman may slaughter animals, because of the general terms used in the texts, and there is no difference in this regard between meat slaughtered as a sacrifice or meat slaughtered for regular food.
