1) DUTIFUL TOWARDS PARENTS. :-

Honouring one’s parents is one of the greatest means of drawing closer to Allaah and one of the most important obligations, and one of the most beloved deeds to Allaah after faith, especially honouring one’s mother, because of her great rights and because of her efforts and kindness.

EVIDENCE FROM QURAN :-

‘Worship Allah(God) and join not any partners with Him; and be kind to your parents…”

(SURAH NISA 4 VERSE 36)

We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents; in pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth”.

(SURAH AL-AHQAF 46 VERSE 15)

Be Kind To Your Parents And Kindred,The Orphans, And Those In Need,And Speak Kindly To Mankind.

(SURAH BAQARAH 2 VERSE 83)

We have enjoined on man and woman kindness to parents; but if they (either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with Me anything of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not'”

(SURAH AL-ANKABUT 29 VERSE 8)

Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. And out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility and say, “My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood.”

(SURAH AL ISRA 17 VERSE 23-24)

We have enjoined on man and woman (to be good) to his/her parents; show gratitude to Me and to thy parents; to Me is (thy final) Goal. If they (parents) strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration) and follow the way of those who turn to Me (in love)”

(SURAH LUQMAN 31 VERSE 14-15)

EVIDENCE FROM SUNNAH :-

He again said: Then who (is the next one)? He said: Again it is your mother (who deserves the best treatment from you). He said: Then who (is the next one)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Again, it is your mother. He (again) said: Then who? Thereupon he said: Then it is your father.

COMMENT :-

Just take a glance at above Hadith due to good coduct with parents Allah has raised his status.

A MAN SHOULD NOT CALL HIS FATHER BY HIS NAME NOR SIT DOWN BEFORE :-

Abu Hurayra saw two men and said to one of them, “Who is this man in relation to you?” He is my father,” he replied. He said, “Do not call him by his own name nor walk in front of him nor sit down before him.”

ADAB UL-MUFRAD (Book 1, Hadith 44)

NEVER TAKE THE CURSE OF MOTHER. :-

Abu Huraira reported that Juraij was one who was devoted to (prayer) in the temple. His mother came to him. Humaid said that Abu Rafi’ demonstrated before us like the demonstration made by abu Huraira to whom Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) had demonstrated as his mother called him placing her palms upon the eyebrows and lifting her head for calling him and said: Juraij, it is your mother, so talk to her. She found him at that time absorbed in prayer, so he said (to himself): O Lord, my mother (is calling me) (whereas I am absorbed) in my prayer. He opted for prayer. She (his mother) went back, then came again for the second time and said: O Juraij, it is your mother (calling you), so talk to me. He said: O Allah. there is my mother also and my prayer, and he opted for prayer. She said: O Allah, this Juraij is my son. I pray to talk to him but he refuses to talk to me. O Allah, don’t bring death to him unless he has seen the prostitutes, and had she invoked the curse upon him (from the heart of her heart) he would have been involved in some turmoil. There was a shepherd living near by his temple (the temple where Juraij was engaged in prayer). It so happened that a woman of that village came there and that shepherd committed fornication with her and she became pregnant and gave birth to a child. It was said to her: Whose child is this? She said: He is the child of one who is living in this temple. So there came persons with hatchets and spades. They called Juraij. He was absorbed in prayer and he did not talk to them and they were about to demolish that temple that he saw them and then came to them and they said: Ask her (this woman) what she says. He smiled and then touched the head of the child and said: Who is your father? He (the child) said: My father is the shepherd of the sheep, and when they heard this, they said: We are prepared to rebuild with gold and silver what we have demolished from your temple. He said: No, rebuild it with clay as it had been before. He then went up (to his room and absorbed himself in prayer).

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 32, Hadith 6187)

Abu Huraira reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Verily Allah created the universe and when He had finished that, ties of relationship came forward and said This is the place for him who seeks refuge from severing (of blood-relationship). He said: Yes. Are you not satisfied that I should keep relationship with one who joins your ties of relationship and sever it with one who severs your (ties of relationship)? They (the ties of blood) said: Certainly so. Thereupon He said: Well, that is how things are for you. Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) then said: Recite if you like: “But if you turn away you are sure to make mischief in the land and cut off the ties of kinship. Those it is whom Allah has cursed, so He has made them deaf and blinded their eyes. Do they not reflect on the Qur’an? Or, are there locks on their hearts?” .

2) DUTIFULNESS TOWARDS A PARENT WHO IS KAAFIR. :-

The Muslim is enjoined to treat his parents well and honour them even if they are kuffaar. It is not permissible for a Muslim to disobey them or treat them badly in word and deed. But that does not mean that he should obey her in matters that are sinful or show approval of the kufr that she believes in.

EVIDENCE FROM QURAN :-

We have enjoined on man and woman kindness to parents; but if they (either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with Me anything of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not'”

(SURAH AL-ANKABUT 29 VERSE 8)

We have enjoined on man and woman (to be good) to his/her parents; show gratitude to Me and to thy parents; to Me is (thy final) Goal. If they (parents) strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration) and follow the way of those who turn to Me (in love)”

(SURAH LUQMAN 31 VERSE 14-15)

IBN JAREER AL-TABARI SAID : –

[This means:] And if your parents strive with you to make you join in worship of Me anyone alongside Me, when you know that I have no partner – for He has no partner, exalted be He far above that – then do not obey them in what they want you to associate with Me. “but behave with them in the world kindly” and obey them in that which has nothing to do with the relationship between you and your Lord, and does not involve sin.

(TAFSEER AL-TABARI, 10/139)

IBN KATHEER SAID : –

i.e., if they strive hard to make you follow them in their religion, then do not accept that from them, but do not let that prevent you from keeping good company with them in this world, i.e., by being kind to them. “and follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and in obedience” means: the path of the believers. End quote.

(TAFSEER IBN KATHEER 6/337)

EVIDENCE FROM SUNNAH :-

Asma’ bint Abu Bakr reported:My mother who was a polytheist came to me when he (the Holy Prophet) entered into treaty with, the Quraish (of Mecca). I inquired from the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) saying: Messenger of Allah, there has come to me my mother and she is inclined; should I (in this state of her mind) show her kindness? He said: Yes, treat her kindly.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 5, Hadith 2195)
SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 1, Book 47, Hadith 792)

Narrated Asma ‘bint Abi Bakr:During the period of the peace treaty of Quraish with Allah’s Apostle, my mother, accompanied by her father, came to visit me, and she was a pagan. I consulted Allah’s Apostle, “O Allah’s Apostle! My mother has come to me and she desires to receive a reward from me, shall I keep good relation with her?” He said, “Yes, keep good relation with her.

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 4, Book 53, Hadith 407)
ABU DAWOOD (Book 9, Hadith 1664)

Narrated Asma’ bint Abu Bakr:My mother came to me during the lifetime of Allah’s Apostle and she was a pagan. I said to Allah’s Apostle (seeking his verdict), “My mother has come to me and she desires to receive a reward from me, shall I keep good relations with her?” The Prophet said, “Yes, keep good relation with her. ”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 3, Book 47, Hadith 789)

Asma’ bint Abi Bakr said, “In the time of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, my mother came to me hoping (I would be dutiful). I asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ‘Do I have to treat her well?’ ‘Yes,’ he replied.”

ADAB UL-MUFRAD (Book 1, Hadith 25)

Mus’ab b. Sa’d reported on the authority of his father that many verses of the Qur’an had been revealed in connection with him. His mother Umm Sa’d had taken oath that she would never talk with him until he abandoned his faith and she neither ate nor drank and said:Allah has commanded you to treat well your parents and I am your mother and I command you to do this. She passed three days in this state until she fainted because of extreme hunger and at that time her son whose name was Umara stood up and served her drink and she began to curse Sa’d that Allah, the Exalted and Glorions, revealed these verses of the Holy Qur’an:” And We have enjoined upon a person goodness to his parents but if they contend with thee to associate (others) with Me of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not” (29 verse 8) ; Treat thein with customary good in this world” (31 verse 15).

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 31, Hadith 5933)

ONE SHOULD KEEN TO CALL HIS PARENTS TO ISLAM. :-

Our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was keen to call his family to Islam, and he continued to visit them and call them; he visited his paternal uncle Abu Taalib when he was dying and invited him to Islam.

Abu Huraira reported:I invited my mother, who was a polytlieist, to Islam. I invited her one day and she said to me something about Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) which I hated. I came to Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) weeping and said: Allah’s Messenger, I invited my mother to Islam but she did not accept (my invitation). I invited her today but she said to me something which I did not like. (Kindly) supplicate Allah that He may set the mother of Abu Huraira right. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: O Allah, set the mother of Abu Huraira on the right path. I came out quite pleased with the supplication of Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) and when I came near the door it was closed from within. My mother heard the noise of my footsteps and she said: Abu Huraira, just wait, and I heard the noiee of falling of water. She took a bath and put on the shirt and quickly covered her head with a headdress and opened the door and then said: Abu Huraira, I bear witness to the fact that there is no god but Allah and Mubammad is His bondsman and His Messenger. He (Abu Huraira) said: I went back to Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) and (this time) I was shedding the tears of joy. I said: Allah’s Messenger, be happy, for Allah has responded to your supplication and He has set on the right path the mother of Abu Huraira. He (the Holy Prophet) praised Allah, and extolled Him and uttered good words. I said: Allah’s Messenger, supplicate to Allah so that He may instil love of mine and that of my mother too in the believing servants and let our hearts be filled with their love, whereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: O Allah, let there be love of these servants of yours, i. e. Abu Huraira and his mother, in the hearts of the believing servants and let their hearts be filled with the love of the believing servants. (Abu Huraira said: This prayer) was so well granted by Allah that no believer was ever born who heard of me and who saw me but did not love me.

3) THE PUNISHMENT FOR DISOBEYING PARENT. :-

One of the most obvious ways of honouring one’s parents is striving to please them and make them happy, and removing things that upset them or annoy them. Fear Allaah and beware of being one of those who disobey their parents without realizing it.

ONE OF THE MAJOR SINS TO DISOBEY PARENTS. :-

Narated By Anas bin Malik : Allah’s Apostle mentioned the greatest sins or he was asked about the greatest sins. He said, “To join partners in worship with Allah; to kill a soul which Allah has forbidden to kill; and to be undutiful or unkind to one’s parents.” The Prophet added, “Shall I inform you of the biggest of the great sins? That is the forged statement or the false witness.” Shu’ba (the sub-narrator) states that most probably the Prophet said, “the false witness.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol 08, Book 073, Hadith 08)

Abu Bakra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Shall I tell you which is the worst of the major wrong actions?” “Yes, Messenger of Allah,” they replied. He said, “Associating something else with Allah and disobeying parents.” he had been reclining, but then he said up and said, “And false witness.” Abu Bakr said, “He continued to repeat it until I said, ‘Is he never going to stop?'”

ADAB UL-MUFRAD (Book 1, Hadith 15)

It was narrated from Salim bin ‘Abdullah that his father said:”The Messenger of Allah said: “There are three at whom Allah will not look on the Day of Resurrection: The one who disobeys his parents, the woman who imitates men in her outward appearance, and the cuckold. And there are three who will not enter Paradise: The one who disobeys his parents, the drunkard, and the one who reminds people of what he has given them.”‘ (Hasan)

SUNAN NASEEI (Vol. 3, Book 3, Hadith 2563)

Taysala ibn Mayyas said, “I was with the Najadites [Kharijites] when I committed wrong actions which I supposed were major wrong actions. I mentioned that to Ibn ‘Umar. He inquired, ‘What are they?” I replied, ‘Such-and-such.’ He stated, ‘These are not major wrong actions. There are nine major wrong actions. They are:associating others with Allah, killing someone, desertion from the army when it is advancing, slandering a chaste woman, usury, consuming an orphan’s property, heresy in the mosque, scoffing, and causing one’s parents to weep through disobedience.’ Ibn ‘Umar then said to me, ‘Do you wish to separate yourself from the Fire? Would you like to enter Paradise?’ ‘By Allah, yes!’ I replied. He asked, ‘Are your parents still alive?’ I replied, ‘My mother is.’ He said, ‘By Allah, if you speak gently to her and feed her, then you will enter the Garden as long as you avoid the major wrong actions.'”

ADAB UL-MUFRAD (Book 1, Hadith 8)

It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Lord is pleased when the parents are pleased and He is angry when the parents are angry.
