ILME-GHAIB (KNOWLEDGE OF UNSEEN)

ILME-GHAIB (KNOWLEDGE OF UNSEEN).

Undoubtedly, we have enough sound evidences to proof and believe that Prophet (p.b.u.h) and other Prophet before him were given certain powers and capabilities by Allah (alone). Knowledge of the unseen is one such power or blessing bestowed by Allah on his messengers. But the matter of dispute (unfortunately) is the subject “Does Prophet (p.b.u.h) have the entire knowledge of unseen or only parts and bits of what Allah revealed to him”

It is the aqeeda (belief) of every muslim affirming that Prophet (p.b.u.h) did inform us about various events that happened in the past, or were about to happen in his era or that would happen in the future and this is referred to as his prophecies. However the answer to the question highlighted above is that ” Prophet (p.b.u.h) had the knowledge of unseen only as much as Allah gave him and not the complete (total) knowledge of unseen which is with Allah (alone) ” and this will be proven below,Some people exaggerate the Prophet (p.b.u.h) of Allah and claim that he KNEW EVERYTHING however the Prophet (p.b.u.h) was not comprehensively acquainted with the Ghayb. He knew some matters of the Ghayb that Allah informed him of.

1) COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNSEEN IS ONLY WITH ALLAH ALONE. :-

1.1) EVIDENCE FROM QURAN. :-
Say: “None in the heavens and the earth knows the Ghaib (Unseen) except Allaah, nor can they perceive when they shall be resurrected”

(SURAH AN-NAML 27 VERSE 65)

“And with Him are the keys of the Ghayb (all that is hidden), none knows them but He. And He knows whatever there is in the land and in the sea; not a leaf falls, but He knows it. There is not a grain in the darkness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry, but is written in a Clear Record”

(SURAH AL-ANAAM 6 VERSE 59)

“Verily, Allaah, with Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allaah is All Knower, All Aware (of things)”

(SURAH LUQMAAN 31 VERSE 34)

1.2) EVIDENCE FROM SUNNAH. :-

Narrated Masruq:

`Aisha said, “If anyone tells you that Muhammad has seen his Lord, he is a liar, for Allah says: ‘No vision can grasp Him.’ (6.103) And if anyone tells you that Muhammad has seen the Unseen, he is a liar, for Allah says: “None has the knowledge of the Unseen but Allah.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 9, Book 93, Hadith 477)

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:

The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, “The keys of the Unseen are five.” And then he recited: ‘Verily, the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (alone).’ (31.34)

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 301)

Narrated Ibn `Umar:

Allah’s Apostle said, “The keys of Unseen are five which none knows but Allah: None knows what will happen tomorrow but Allah; none knows what is in the wombs (a male child or a female) but Allah; none knows when it will rain but Allah; none knows at what place one will die; none knows when the Hour will be established but Allah.” (See The Qur’an 31:34.”)

NOTE :-

ALLAMA ALUSI HANAFI SAID :-

The knowledge of all the Unseen is only known by Almighty Allah alone. The knowledge of his Unseen cannot be limited to these 5 things, keeping this creed is most important. Now the question what was the reason that to limit the knowledge(i.e of Unseen) of Almighty to these 5 things, It is because the question was asked regarding these things or because a person naturally wanted to know the answer of these questions.

Narrated AbuHurayrah:AbuBakr as-Siddiq said: Messenger of Allah! command me something to say in the morning and in the evening. He said: Say “O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who knowest the unseen and the seen, Lord and Possessor of everything. I testify that there is no god but Thee; I seek refuge in Thee from the evil within myself, from the evil of the devil, and his (incitement to) attributing partners (to Allah).” He said: Say this in the morning.

ABU DAWOOD (Book 42, Hadith 5049)

‘Abd al-Rahman b. ‘Auf reported:I asked ‘A’isha, the mother of the believers, (to tell me) the words with which the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) commenced the prayer when he got up at night. She said: When he got up at night he would commence his prayer with these words: O Allah, Lord of Gabriel, and Michael, and Israfil, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who knowest the unseen and the seen; Thou decidest amongst Thy servants concerning their differences. Guide me with Thy permission in the divergent views (which the people) hold about Truth, for it is Thou Who guidest whom Thou wilt to the Straight Path.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1694)
ABU DAWOOD (Book 2, Hadith 766)
SUNAN NASEEI ( Vol. 2, Book 20, Hadith 1626)

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:As-Salami: Allah’s Apostle used to teach his companions to perform the prayer of Istikhara for each and every matter just as he used to teach them the Suras from the Qur’an He used to say, “If anyone of you intends to do some thing, he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory prayers, and after finishing it, he should say: O Allah! I consult You, for You have all knowledge, and appeal to You to support me with Your Power and ask for Your Bounty, for You are able to do things while I am not, and You know while I do not; and You are the Knower of the Unseen. O Allah If You know It this matter (name your matter) is good for me both at present and in the future, (or in my religion), in my this life and in the Hereafter, then fulfill it for me and make it easy for me, and then bestow Your Blessings on me in that matter. O Allah! If You know that this matter is not good for me in my religion, in my this life and in my coming Hereafter (or at present or in the future), then divert me from it and choose for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me be pleased with it.”

2) PROPHET (P.B.U.H) HAD THE KNOWLEDGE OF UNSEEN ONLY AS MUCH AS ALLAH INFORMED HIM THROUGH WAHI (REVELATION). :-

2.1) EVIDENCE FROM QURAN. :-

Everything that the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has told us about the unseen, past, present and future, such as the beginning of creation, the resurrection, Paradise, Hell, the signs of the Hour, the angels and the Prophets, all of that is by revelation (wahy) from Allaah, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only a Revelation revealed”

(SURAH AN-NAJM 53 VERSE 3-4)

That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. You knew it not, neither you nor your people, before this. So be patient; indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous .

(SURAH HOOD 11 VERSE 49)

That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad].

(SURAH AL IMRAN 3 VERSE 44)

Allah would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allah reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allah chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward.

(SURAH AL IMRAN 3 VERSE 179)

[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone.

Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before each messenger and behind him observers.

(SURAH JINN 72 VERSE 26-27)

2.2) EVIDENCE FROM SUNNAH. :-

There are many ahadeeth where it is proven that whatever Prophet (p.b.u.h) informed us was only through revelation he received from Allaah as we have explained above. Thus, we do not want to make this article more lengthy assuming that the proofs we have presented is sufficient for a seeker of knowledge. Hence it is obligatory to believe everything that Allaah has told the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) concerning the unseen and other matters, for he is the one who tells the truth and is to be believed. Whoever disbelieves him, even if it is with regard to only one report that he knows to be sound (saheeh), becomes an apostate thereby, if he is Muslim.

3) RESPONSE TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE THAT THE PROPHET (P.B.U.H) KNEW EVERYTHING (KULLI KNOWLEDGE OF UNSEEN). :-

SUFI SCHOLAR PROFESSOR DR MUHAMMAD MAS’UD AHMED, M.A. PHD.SAID :-

The Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) was sent as a “Shahid” (Witness), i.e. a person who is in constant touch will the affairs taking place in the world, examining and analyzing them as an observer with an insight to assess and analyse their influence in day-to-day matters. He thus remained ever aware of the God-gifted vigilance possessing full knowledge as an eye-witness, with powers of Haqq-ul-Yaqeen and Ain-ul-Yaqeen – the faculty of witnessing things with unwavering faith and certitude. AHMAD YAAR KHAN NAEEMI SAID :-

Some people consider knowledge of Prophet (p.b.u.h) equal to Allah(swt) with difference of his own knowledge and knowledge given (atai). But shaykh Abdul Haq didn’t declare such people mushrik, rather called them knowledgeable(learned). With this we come to know that believing in Prophet (p.b.u.h)’s knowledge of unseen is not shirk.

BELOW ARE REFUTATION OF ABOVE SAYING OF SUFI SCHOLAR :-

3.1) EVIDENCE FROM QURAN. :-

Say, “I hold not for myself [the power of] benefit or harm, except what Allah has willed. And if I knew the unseen, I could have acquired much wealth, and no harm would have touched me. I am not except a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe.”

(SURAH ARAAF 7 VERSE 188)

Say, [O Muhammad], “I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.” Say, “Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?”

(SURAH AL-ANAAM 6 VERSE 50)

And I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel, nor do I say of those upon whom your eyes look down that Allah will never grant them any good. Allah is most knowing of what is within their souls. Indeed, I would then be among the wrongdoers.”

(SURAH HOOD 11 VERSE 31)

Say, “I am not something original among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner.”

(SURAH AL-AHQAF 46 VERSE 9)

[Be warned of] the Day when Allah will assemble the messengers and say, “What was the response you received?” They will say, “We have no knowledge. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen”

(SURAH MAIDAH 5 VERSE 109)

3.2) EVIDENCE FROM SUNNAH. :-

Narrated AbuSa’id al-Khudri:While the Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) was leading his Companions in prayer, he took off his sandals and laid them on his left side; so when the people saw this, they removed their sandals. When the Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) finished his prayer, he asked: What made you remove your sandals? The replied: We saw you remove your sandals, so we removed our sandals. The Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) then said: Gabriel came to me and informed me that there was filth in them. When any of you comes to the mosque, he should see; if he finds filth on his sandals, he should wipe it off and pray in them.

ABU DAWOOD (Book 2, Hadith 0650)

COMMENT :-

If he (p.b.u.h) had ‘kulli’ knowledge as per sufi creed, then why he (p.b.u.h) himself offered salah with dirt on his sandals when he has ‘kulli’ (full knowledge of unseen)?? na auzubillah.

It was narrated from Jubayr ibn Mut’im that a man came to the Prophet (p.b.u.h) (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allaah, which part of the land is worst? He said: “I do not know.” When Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to him he said: “O Jibreel, which part of the land is worst?” He said: “I do not know, until I ask my Lord, may He be glorified and exalted.” Jibreel (peace be upon him) went away, and stayed away for as long as Allaah willed that he should stay away. Then he came and said: “O Muhammad, you asked me which part of the land is worst and I said I did not know. I asked my Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, and He said: Its markets.”

Narrated ‘Um Al-`Ala:An Ansari woman who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet that the Ansar drew lots concerning the dwelling of the Emigrants. `Uthman bin Maz’un was decided to dwell with them (i.e. Um Al-`Ala’s family), `Uthman fell ill and I nursed him till he died, and we covered him with his clothes. Then the Prophet came to us and I (addressing the dead body) said, “O Abu As-Sa’ib, may Allah’s Mercy be on you! I bear witness that Allah has honored you.” On that the Prophet said, “How do you know that Allah has honored him?” I replied, “I do not know. May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Allah’s Apostle! But who else is worthy of it (if not `Uthman)?” He said, “As to him, by Allah, death has overtaken him, and I hope the best for him. By Allah, though I am the Apostle of Allah, yet I do not know what Allah will do to me,” By Allah, I will never assert the piety of anyone after him. That made me sad, and when I slept I saw in a dream a flowing stream for `Uthman bin Maz’un. I went to Allah’s Apostle and told him of it. He remarked, “That symbolizes his (good) deeds.”

He therefore provided them with seventy men from the Ansar whom we used to call Al-Qurra’ in their lifetime. They used to collect wood by daytime and pray at night. When they were at the well of Ma’una, the infidels killed them by betraying them. When this news reached the Prophet , he said Al-Qunut for one month In the morning prayer, invoking evil upon some of the ‘Arab tribes, upon Ril, Dhakwan, ‘Usaiya and Bani Libyan. We used to read a verse of the Qur’an revealed in their connection, but later the verse was cancelled. He asked: What is my Horse pregnant with?
The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said: This is from the knowledge of unseen and Allah knows the unseen.

He said: Give me your sword.
The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said: Hold it.

He took out the sword from the scabbered and raised it in the air.

The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said: You will not be able to do what you intend to.
Then The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said:
This person came with the intention that he would ask questions first and then he would kill me, and then he put the sword in the scabbered”.

3.3) EVIDENCE FROM HANAFI SCHOLAR. :-

MULLA ALI AL-QARI AL-HANAFI SAID :-

Know that the Prophets (p.b.u.h) did not know matters related to hidden knowledge except for those that Allah taught them SOMETIMES (Ahyanan) and the Ahnaf have clearly affirmed the Takfeer (excommunication from Islam)for those who hold the belief that the Prophet (saw) knows Al-Ghayb (the Unseen) contradicting His saying:Say: “None in the heavens and the earth knows the Ghaib (Unseen) except Allaah, nor can they perceive when they shall be resurrected”

COMMENT :-

The words of Mulla Ali Al-Qari: “SOMETIMES (Ahyanan)”clearly means that on some occasions only Allah taught the Prophet(saw) some matters of the Unseen, and for Mullah Ali Al-Qari this only occurred
“Ahyanan” meaning in some cases, and he did not say that the Prophet (saw)received the knowledge of everything, the knowledge of Al-Lahw Al-Mahfuz (Preserved Tablets) that contain everything that is to occur up to judgement day, so the ‘Ata’i knowledge of the Prophet (saw) of the Unseen was only for some matters (Ahyanan). And Mulla Ali Al-Qari is speaking for final stage and not for beginning stage, else he would say that later on the Prophet (saw) was not informed Ahyanan(sometimes) but knew everything, was taught everything.

MULLA ALI AL-QARI FURTHER SAID :-

“AS FOR THINGS CONNECTED TO THIS WORLD, IT IS NOT A PRECONDITION THAT THE PROPHETS BE PROTECTED FROM A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THEM as it is misconceived by the Shi’ah and they are refuted by the saying of Al-HudHud to Sulayman (may the Salah and Salam be upon him): “I have grasped (the knowledge of a thing) which you have not grasped” (27: 22) OR FROM BELIEVING THEM TO BE DIFFERENT FROM HOW THEY ACTUALLY ARE meaning contrary to their reality as it is indicated by his saying (saw) to the Ansar while they were pollinating the date palm trees: You should not do such, so they left its pollination and they only obtained few (dates) from them, so he said to them: you know better the matters of the your world, and likewise for his turning to the view of Al-Habab ibn Al-Mundhir at the battle of Badr as it has preceded.”

COMMENT :-

So for Mulla Ali Al-Qari,the belief that the Prophets must know the matters of this world is the belief of the Shi’ah, and they are refuted by the fact that Al-HudHud knew some matters that Sulayman did not know. So for Mulla Ali Al-Qari, this creed is that of the Shi’ah and not Ahlus Sunnah, and he is speaking about last stage, else he would not describe this as the Shi’ah’s belief, but say that AhlusSunnah believe that at the end of his life after the completion of the Quran, the Prophet (saw) knew all matters of the world. So refuting this belief and attributing it to the Shi’ah shows that the Prophet (saw) was never conferred such knowledge, and this denies given knowledge (‘Ata’i knowledge).

MULLA ALI AL-QARI FURTHER SAID :-

“HOWEVER, IT IS NOT NECESSARY FOR HIM TO HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF EVERY SINGLE DETAIL CONCERNING THEM rather likely it is said, it is not conceivable for him to comprehend whatever is in it”

COMMENT :-

So for Mulla Ali Al-Qari,it is not conceivable to think that the
Prophet(saw) knew every single detail of what is and what would be (Makana wa ma Yakunu), every single detail of the hidden matters of realms of the heavens and earth and others. Such a belief similar to Sufis is inconceivable for Mulla Ali Al-Qari.

ALLAMA BADDAR UD DIN AINI HANAFI SAID :-

The Saying of Prophet (p.b.u.h) that I am a Human being means that Prophet (p.b.u.h) had the Sift of Human being and the Human being doesn’t know any Knowledge of Unseen except what Allah tells them.

(UMMDATUL QARI 24/247)

ALLAMA AINI FURTHER SAID :-

The Saying of Nabi s.a.w that i am a human being is to be said on both the Group and Singular, It means that Prophet (p.b.u.h) peace be upon him is a person amongst the Gender of Human beings, In Reality Prophet (p.b.u.h) in Creation is a Human being, even though in Characteristics and in Nature is full of several specialties due to which he is Greater than any Common Human Being these Specialties are mentioned in Sharah Maa’ani Al Athaar. The Saying of Prophet (p.b.u.h) I am a Human being means i am amongst the Human being and i don’t know Hidden (Batin) of your rivals about which you take the matter to me. And I do Judge according to what is apparent to me.When Prophet (p.b.u.h) doesn’t know the Knowledge of Unseen so the claim from Kahin and Najumi is false. Amongst the Ghaib Prophet (p.b.u.h) only know which is told to them through the revelation.

(UMMDATUL QARI 24/257)

ALLAMAH ALUSI HANAFI SAID :-

Allamah Alusi Hanafi also said under 46 verse 9,And I do not see any good in the saying of someone: He peace be upon him knew the unseen. It is good to say that: Allah informed the unseen to him peace and blessings of Allah be upon him or he was told (by Allah Subhana wa tala).”

Narrated Hudhaifa:The Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) stood among us (to give us an address) and he left out nothing that would happen up to the last hour without telling of it. Some remembered it and some forgot, and these Companions of his have known it. When something of it which I have forgotten happens, I remembered it, just as a man remembers another’s face when he is a away and recognizes him when he sees him.

The Hanafi Fuqaha denied the Prophet (saw) knowing the Unseen during his life and after. So what is denied is ‘ata’i knowledge (conferred knowledge), meaning that the Prophet (saw) was not given such a knowledge,he is not a witness of such events, else if they believed that the Prophet (saw) was given such a knowledge, why would they excommunicate the one who takes him as a witness?

CREED OF IMAM ABU HANEEFA (R.H) REGARDING UNSEEN :-

Tafsir-e-Madarak of Imam Nafsi (rah), He writes under Surah Luqman Verse 34, the incident of Imam Abu Hanifah (rah).”(Caliph) Mansoor saw the face of Malik-Al Maut (i.e Angel of Death) and asked about the duration of his age, Malik Al-Maut give indication with his 5 fingers, Amongst the Interpreters (i.e of the Dreams) some of them told 5 years, some told 5 months and some took it as 5 days, Imam Abu Hanifah said the indication of Malik-Al Maut was related to this ayat (i.e Surah Luqman Verse 34) Because these 5 Knowledge is only known by Allah and none else.”

IBN ‘ABDUL BARR SAID :-

The fiqh of this hadith is that human beings don’t know what is hidden from them and concealed in the hearts and other than it because the Prophet (p.b.u.h) peace be upon him in this hadith said “I am only but a human”, that is: I am a human being and I don’t know the inner state of what you judge by and quarrels you bring to me. I only give a judgment between you based on what is outwardly apparent (dhaahir) of what you say and indicate from your arguments. The Prophet (p.b.u.h) don’t know that. It is not valid to claim that for anyone else besides them whether he is a monk or astrologer.

Nawawi said under the hadith “I am just a human”The saying of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) (‘I am just a human’) is to affirm his nature as a human being and to explicate that humans neither apprehend nor hold knowledge of the unseen and hidden realms except that which Allah discloses to them, and to explicate that whatever is applicable to people in general is also applicable to him.

He reprimanded her of her praise because she applied the knowledge of ghayb to him without qualification, and this is an attribute unique to Allah (Exalted is He!). Allah (Exalted is He!) says “Say (O Muhammad): None in the heavens and the earth knoweth the Unseen save Allah” (27:65), and His statement to His Prophet (p.b.u.h) “Say: For myself I have no power to benefit, nor power to hurt, save that which Allah willeth. 4) CONCLUSION. :-

In light of the above evidences from Qur’aan and the authentic hadeeth of the Messenger of Allah (saws), it is obvious that the the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) knows only those things which Allaah revealed to him. It is Allaah alone who has the complete knowledge of unseen and no one in this universe possesses the knowledge of the ‘unseen’ except Allaah alone.
