ALLAH HAS MADE FASTING THIS MONTH THE FOURTH PILLAR OF ISLAM. :-

It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullah son of ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:(The superstructure of) al-Islam is raised on five (pillars), testifying (the fact) that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is His bondsman and messenger, and the establishment of prayer, payment of Zakat, Pilgrimage to the House (Ka’ba) and the fast of Ramadan.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 1, Hadith 20)

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that:A man said to him: “Why don’t you go out and fight?” He said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say: ‘Islam is built on five (pillars): Testimony that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, establishing Salah, giving Zakah, Hajj, and fasting Ramadan.'” (Sahih)

SUNAN NASEEI (Vol. 6, Book 47, Hadith 5004)

ALLAH REVEALED THE QUR’AAN IN THIS MONTH. :-

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Sawm (fasts) that month…”

(SURAH AL-BAQARAH 2 VERSE 185)

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning)

“Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree).”

(SURAH AL-QADAR 97 VERSE 1)

ALLAH HAS MADE LAYLAT AL-QADR IN THIS MONTH, WHICH IS BETTER THAN A THOUSAND MONTHS. :-

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree).

And what will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is?

The Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allaah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).

Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allaah’s Permission with all Decrees,

(All that night), there is peace (and goodness from Allaah to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn”

(SURAH AL-QADAR 97 VERSE 1-5)

Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].

(SURAH AL-DUKHAAN 44 VERSE 3)

Allaah has blessed Ramadaan with Laylat al-Qadr. Explaining the great status of this blessed night, Soorat al-Qadr was revealed, and there are many ahaadeeth which also speak of that,
such as ,

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:”The Messenger of Allah said: ‘There has come to your Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.

SUNAN NASEEI (Vol. 3, Book 22, Hadith 2108)

Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever spends Laylat al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, will be forgiven his previous sins.”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 3, Book 32, Hadith 231)

ALLAH HAS MADE FASTING & SPENDING NIGHTS IN PRAYER OUT OF FAITH IN THE HOPE OF REWARD A MEANS OF FORGIVENESS OF SINS. :-

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:He who observed the fasts of Ramadan with faith and seeking reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven, and he who observed prayer on Lailat-ul- Qadr with faith and seeking reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven.

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 4, Hadith 1664)

Narrated Abu Huraira:The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, “Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven .”

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 3, Book 32, Hadith 231)

The Muslims are unanimously agreed that it is Sunnah to pray qiyaam at night in Ramadaan. Al-Nawawi said that what is meant by praying qiyaam in Ramadaan is to pray Taraweeh, i.e., one achieves what is meant by qiyaam by praying Taraaweeh.

UMRAH IN RAMADAAN IS EQUIVALENT TO HAJJ. :-

Ataa reported:I heard Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) narrating to us that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to a woman of the Ansar (Ibn Abbas had mentioned her name but I have forgotten it): ‘What has prevented you that you do not perform Hajj along with us? She said: We have only two camels for carrying water. One of the camels has been taken by my husband and my son for performing Hajj and one has been left for us for carrying water, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: So when the month of Ramadan come, perform Umra, for’Umra in this (month) is equal to Hajj (in reward).

SAHIH MUSLIM (Book 6, Hadith 2640)

IT IS MUSTAHABB IN THE SENSE OF BEING STRONGLY RECOMMENDED IN RAMADAAN TO STUDY THE QUR’AAN TOGETHER AND TO READ IT A GREAT DEAL. :-

One may study the Qur’aan together by reciting it to someone else and by having someone else recite it to you. The evidence that this is mustahabb is the fact that Jibreel used to meet the Prophet (p.b.u.h) every night in Ramadaan and study the Qur’aan with him.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:Allah’s Messenger (p.b.u.h) was the most generous of all the people, and he used to be more generous in the month of Ramadan when Gabriel used to meet him. Gabriel used to meet him every night in Ramadan to study the Holy Qur’an carefully together. Allah’s Messenger (p.b.u.h) used to become more generous than the fast wind when he met Gabriel.

SAHIH BUKHARI (Vol. 4, Book 54, Hadith 443)

Reading Qur’aaan is mustahabb in general, but more so in Ramadaan.

IT IS MUSTAHABB IN RAMADAAN TO OFFER IFTAAR TO THOSE WHO ARE FASTING. :-

Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani narrated that:The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever provides the food for a fasting person to break his fast with, then for his is the same reward as his (the fasting person’s), without anything being diminished from the reward of the fasting person.” (Sahih)
