HOW SHOULD ONE SAY TASLEEM IN FUNERAL PRAYERS? ONE SIDE OR BOTH SIDES?


Tasleem to one side only in the funeral prayer is authentically proven from the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).

PROOF 1 :-

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ الْبُهْلُولِ ، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْعَنْقَرِيُّ , ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ , ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ , عَنْ أَبِي الْعَنْبَسِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ , ” أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ فَكَبَّرَ عَلَيْهَا أَرْبَعًا , وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيمَةً وَاحِدَةً

It is narrated from Abu Huraira May Allah be pleased with him:“Indeed The Prophet Peace Be Upon Him prayed funeral prayer over a deceased, He (Peace Be Upon Him ) said fours takbeers and finished it with only one tasleem”.

PROOF 2 :-

حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ ” إذَا صَلَّى عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ رَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ فَكَبَّرَ ، فَإِذَا فَرَغَ سَلَّمَ عَلَى يَمِينِهِ وَاحِدَةً

Nafi’ (Mercy Of Allah be upon Him) states about Ibne Umer may Allah be pleased with him:“Whenever He (Ibne Umer) prayed a funeral prayer he would raise his hands (Rafa ul Yadain), the he would say takbeer, and he would finish the funeral prayer with tasleem to his right side”.

MUSSANAF IBNE ABI SHAIBAH (HADEETH 11611)

PROOF 3 :-

حدثنا إسماعيل بن عياش عن عمرو بن مهاجر قال صليت مع واثلة على ستين جنازة من الطاعون رجال ونساء فكبر أربع تكبيرات وسلم تسليمة .

Umro Bin Muhajir Damashqi says:“ I prayed sixty funeral prayers of men and women who died of plague, with Wasila Bin Asqa’ may Allah be pleased with him, He would say four takbeers and would say one tasleem only.

MUSSANAF IBNE ABI SHAIBAH (HADTIH 11625)

PROOF 4 :-

حدثنا وكيع والفضل بن دكين عن سفيان عن منصور بن حيان عن سعيد بن جبير أنه كان يسلم على الجنازة تسليمة



Saeed Bin Jubair (Tabiee) rahimullah would say one tasleem.

MUSANNAF IBNE ABI SHAIBAH (HADITH 11621)

 

PROOF 5 :-

حدثنا معتمر بن سليمان عن أبيه قال صلى ابن سيرين فسلم تسليمة فأسمع على الجنازة

Imam Muhammad Bin Sireen rahimullah would say one tasleem.

MUSSANAF IBNE ABI SHAIBAH (HADITH 11619)


PROOF 6 :-

Imam Hasan Basri rahimullah would say one tasleem.

PROOF 7 :-

حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ ، قَالَ : حدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ ، قَالَ : صَلَّيْت خَلْفَ مَكْحُولٍ عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ فَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيمَةً عَنْ يَمِينِهِ

Imam Makhool (Tabiee) rahimullah would say one tasleem.

MUSANNAF IBNE ABI SHAIBAH (HADITH 11626)

 

PROOF 8 :-

Imam Abdullah Bin Mubarak rahimullah says:

من سلم على الجنازة بتسليمتين، فهو جاهل،جاهل

“Whoever prayed a funeral prayer with two tasleems is a Jahil, is a jahil.”

(MASAIL AHMED ABI DAWOOD: 154, CHAIN SAHEEH)


PROOF 9 :-

Abul Fazal Salih Bin Ahmed Bin Hanbal Rahimullah (D:265 H) states about his father Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal rahimullah:


وكان يكبر على الجنازة أربعا، ويرفع يديه مع كل تكبيرة، ويقرا فاتحة الكتاب في أول تكبيرة، ثما يسلم تسلمة واحدة



“ He (Ahmed Bin Hanbal) rahimullah would say four takbeers in a funeral prayer, He would raise his hands with every takbeer, He would read Surah Al Fatiha after the first takbeer, and then He would say tasleem only once”.

PROOFS OF SAYING TWO TASLEEMS IN A FUNERAL PRAYER AND ITS ANALYSIS :-

There is no authentic narration about two tasleems in a funeral prayer.

PROOF 1 :-

Ibrahim Al Hijri says that Abdullah Bin Abi Aufa (May Allah be pleased with him) prayed a funeral prayer with tasleems to right and left and then said:“ I have seen the Prophet (peace be upon him) doing like this”.

(SUNAN AL QUBRA BAIHAIQI 43/4)

ANALYSIS :-

The chain of this narration is weak “Daeef”. Ibrahim Bin Muslim Hijri in the chain is “Daeef” according to majority of muhaditheen. Imam Abu Hatim Razi, Imam Nisaee, Imam Bukhari, Imam Tirmidhi, Imam Ibne Adee, Imam Yahya Bin Maeen, Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal, Imam Jozjani, Imam Ibne Sa’ad and Ibne Junaid have made a severe criticism on him.

Hafiz Ibne Hijr rahimullah has declared him:

لين الحديث،رفع موقوفات

(TAQREEB U TEHZEEB: 252)

Hafiz Dhahabi has declared him “Daeef”.

(TALKHEES AL MUSTADRAK DHAHABI: 555/1)


PROOF 2 :-

وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو حَامِدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الرَّازِيُّ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ زَاهِرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ أَعْيَنَ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ، عَنْ حَمَّادٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، وَالْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: ” ثَلَاثُ خِلَالٍ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَفْعَلُهُنَّ، تَرَكَهُنَّ النَّاسُ , إِحْدَاهُنَّ: التَّسْلِيمُ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ مِثْلُ التَّسْلِيمِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ “

Abdullah Ibne Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) says:“ Three acts which the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) used to do and the people have now left them, one of them is tasleem in the funeral prayers like the regular prayers.”

SUNAN AL KUBRA BAIHAIQI (HADITH 6457,43/4)

ANALYSIS:

This narration is “Daeef”. The narrator “Ibrahim Nakh’ee’ is “Mudallis” and is narrating with “A’nn-عن”. It is an established principle that when a “Thiqah Mudallis” (except Bukhari and Muslim) narrates with “A’nn-عن”, then that narration is “Daeef”, unless and until the “Samaa’” is proved.


PROOF 3 :-

حدثنا عبد الله بن احمد بن حنبل قال وجدت في كتاب ابي بخطة حدثنا خالد بن نافع الاشعري عن سعيد بن ابي بردة عن ابيه عن ابي موسى قال صلينا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم على جنازة فسلم عن يمينه وعن شماله

Abu Moosa Asha’ri (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) says:“We prayed a funeral prayer over a deceased with the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said tasleem to his right and left”.

MU’JAM UL AWSAT TABARANI (HADITH 4337)

ANALYSIS:

This narration is “Daeef”. Khalid Bin Naafi’ Al Ash’ari is “Daeef”.

Imam Abu Zar’aa’ says:

“He is “Daeef ul Hadith”.

(JARAH WA TA’DEEL IBN ABI HATIM: 355/3)

Imam Abu Hatim Razi says:

شيخ ليس بقوي،يكتب حديثه

“This Sheikh is not strong/reliable. His ahadith will be written (In Mutaabi’aat wa Shwahid).”

(JARAH WA TA’DEEL: 355/3)

Imam Nasaee has also graded him “Daeef”.

(KITAB UL DHU’FA’ WAL MATROKEEN NISAEE:PG 172)


PROOF 4 :-

“Ibraheen Nakh’ee’ Rahimullah would say tasleem to his right and left in a funeral prayer.”

MUSSANAF IBNE ABI SHAIBAH (HADITH 307/3,CHAIN HASAN)

 

COMMENTS:

1. This act of Ibraheen Nakh’ee’ Rahimullah is not viable because it is in contradiction with the act of The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him), Two companions of the Prophet, Ibne Umer nd Wasila Bin Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with them) and majority of the Imams.

2.


حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ إيَاسٍ ، عَنْ إبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : تَسْليم السَّهو وَالْجِنَازَةِ وَاحِد.



Ibraheen Nakh’ee’ Rahimullah himself says:”The tasleem of “Sahw (Prostration of forgetfulness) and funeral prayer is single”.

MUSANNAF IBNE ABI SHAIBAH (HADITH 11616)

CONCLUSION:

There is only one tasleem in a funeral prayer. Two talseems are not proven from the Prophet (Peace be upon him) or any Sahabi (May Allah be pleased with them All) via a saheeh chain. Upon the claimant is to produce proof.
