And he (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu ‘alayhiwasallam]) withholds not a knowledge of the Unseen.
(SURAH AT-TAKWEER 81 VERSE 24)
The whole Ummah agrees that the word “Unseen” in the verse means “Wahee (Revelation)” and Quran. Making istedlal from this verse that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had the knowledge of Unseen apart from wahee, is a distortion in the meaning of Quran and a heretical belief.
IBNE QAYYIM SAID :-
“There is an Ijma of the commentators of Quran that “Ghaib (Unseen)” in this verse means “Wahee (Revelation) and Quran”.
(AL-TABYAN FEE AQSAAM UL QURAN, PAGE :197 )
One way of recitation of “بضنین “ is “بظنين” too. Explaining its meaning the famous commentator of Quran Saeed Bin Jubair Tabiee says:
“The Prophet (Peace be upon him) is not guilty of hiding the revelation”.
(JAMI’AL- BAYAN AN TA’WEEL AYEAL QURAN TABARI: 103/30, CHAIN SAHEEH)
HAFIZ IBNE KATHIR SAID :-
“Muhamad (Peace be upon him) does not hide what Allah has revealed. Some narrators has recited it with “ض”, meaning that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would not reserve or hoardany of the revelation but would convey each and every one of it.
(TAFSEER UL QURAN AL-AZEEM: 404/6)
Iman Jarir Tabari while declaring the recitation with “ض” to be more correct says:
وما محمد على ما علمه الله من وحيه وتنزيله بيبخل بتعليمكموه أيها الناس ، بال هو حريص على أن تومنو به وتتعلموه
“O People! Muhammad (Peace Be upon him) is not miser in teaching you the Book and the revelation taught by Allah, rather He wants you to have faith in it and learn it.”.
(JAMI’UL BAYAN AN TA’WEEL AYEE AL QURAN: 104/30)
IBNE QAYYIM SAID :-
“وهذا معني حسن جداً، فان عادة النفوس الشخ بالشي ء النفس، ولا سيما أمان لا يعرف قدره ويزمه ويذم من هو عنده، ومع هذا فهذا الرسول لا يبهل عليكم بالوحي الذي هو أنفس شئ وأجله”
“ This is the best translation of this verse that the Prophet (peace be upon him) is not a miser in teaching and forwarding the revelation of Allah, because habitually people conceals a precious thing, especially from the people who are not aware of its worth, or from the people who will humiliate or desecrate that thing. But despite of all this the Prophet (Peace be upon him) is not a miser regarding conveying the revelation of Allah, which is the best of all things on the face of universe”.
(AL-TABYAN FEE AQSAAM ALQURAN,PAGE 197)
The famous Lexicologist “Faraa’”(D:207H) says :
يقول: يا تيه غيب السماء ، وهو منفوس فيه، فلا يضن به عنكم.
“Allah says that the knowledge of unseen is revealed to the Prophet, this revelation very dear to him but He does not hide conceals it from you”.
(MAA’NI AL QURAN AAN FARAA’: 242/3)
The expert on Arabic lexicon, Allama Abu Ali Farse (288-377H) says:
المعنى : ياتيه الغيب فيبينه ويخبر به ويظهره، ولا يكتمه كما يكتم الكاهن ما عنده، ويخفيه حتى يا خذ عليه حلوانا
“The meaning of this verse is that the knowledge of unseen is revealed to the Prophet (Peace be upon him), and he passes it forward and reveals it to the people. The Prophet (peace be upon him) does not act like a priest who conceals the news until he is paid for it.”
(AL-TABYAN FEE AQSAAM ALQURAN, IBNE QAYYIM,PAGE 197)
It is very much clear from this verse that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not conceal any of the revelations. He would convey the revelation in letter and spirit. Now concluding from this verse that the Prophet had the knowledge of unseen is an injustice to both literatures i.e. lexicography and commentary of Quran. None of the sahaba or Tabieen have understood the verse in the manner that the prophet had the knowledge of unseen. The salaf were of the belief that none has the knowledge of unseen except Allah.
